TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

What a fantastic night of racing we have tonight at Headquarters, we have the Final of the SA Sprint with $15,000 to the winner (race8) it’s a high quality affair, we also have 4 heats of the John Gray over the 515m which all look wide open add to that later in the night a very smart 600 affair. As usual all races are Trifecta and First Four events and with full fields throughout the evening, we should get some handy value.

Race 1 - Shima Breeze is coming off a slick win at Warrnambool over the 450m she has a very good record at this venue and certainly is the one to catch. Rouge is our value runner as he has been in fine form and is drawn to run a cheeky race at odds Allinga Mal and Fly For Fun can fill the First Four. Box up 1.2.3.8

Race 2 - Oakvale Elite was slow away here last start from a middle draw but he is well drawn tonight and should be on the pace early. Jervois Boy has been in terrific form and from a lovely draw could be a smokey at big odds. Gemma Nismo and Sols Buddy have their fair share of ability and cant be overlooked. Box up 1.2.5.7

Race 3 - This certainly is a wide open affair! we have Go Quantum making his SA debut, he was a last start winner at Sandown in 29.87 winning from box 6 and is sure to give this a big shake on recent efforts. Springvale Jorja didn’t have a ounce of luck here last week when she finished well down the track but she is a lot better than that effort and is very smart when on song.  Box up 2.4.5.6

Race 4 - Boss McLaren got us the bickies here last week with a big win from box 1 and he is well drawn again - the one to beat! Street Outlaw is a newcomer who won at Bendigo last start in BON he is a strong type at will definitely be right in the mix. Add Where’s Sparky and Feelin' for the minors. Box Up 1.2.3.6

Race 5 - The Sharyn Gray sprinter I’m Top Girl is well drawn tonight and should prove very hard to beat. She loves this draw and should be able to kick up early and score. Unique Edition is ultra-consistent he is a must for our trifecta. Box Up 1.5.6.7

Race 6 - I like the newcomer in this and that is Lagoon Rhett in box 4, he won 2 starts back over the 450 at Warrnambool in BON 25.16 then finished 4th at Sandown after finding early trouble - he is our top pick. Winsome Dylan and the speedy Victa Norman for the minors. Box Up 1.4.6.7

Race 7 - This appears a very good First Four event as there is a heap of chances. Could Be Magic has won 3 of 3 at this venue and has early pace. Instantaneous is better than his last 2 suggests and has to be put in the mix. Holy Reign will be coming late and is in top form. Box Up 1.4.5.7

Race 8 - The Final of the SA Sprint and as mentioned earlier it carries $15,000 to the winner. Alfieri drew the wrong side of the track here last week and charged late to run 2nd - he is a class act with a clear run and has a personal best of 29.50 at this venue. We cant write-off Cairnlea Ebony, she found herself back in the pack here last start and is very smart on her night - is at good each way odds. Coorong Lucy has only missed a cheque twice in 17 starts here and is drawn to be right in the finish. Box Up 1.2.6.8

Race 9 - Almighty Stripe gets his chance to bounce back in this, he loves the draw and with moderate beginners on his outside should lead and win. Fantastic Flame can improve and should run into the placings along with McLaren Dazzler who was checked out of it early here last week and is more than capable of surprising. Box Up 1.3.4.7

Race 10 - We go home on a 600m event and the Victorian Rajasthan is the one to catch! H is racing well and won at Sandown 2 runs back over 595m. Two Times Twice is well drawn and can run into the placings along with Aston Chandon who will be carving across. Box Up 1.2.4.8

VALE GEORGE REHMANN

George passed away on Monday after a long battle with illness aged 77 years.

George migrated to Australia in 1956 as a refugee fleeing the Hungarian revolution.  He met his wife, Irene, and they married in 1961.  A trainer and breeder since 1972, he managed to train a winner on the opening night of racing at Port Pirie. Other early successes as a trainer included running 3rd to Bristol Miss with Fashion Gem in the first ever Adelaide Cup and another prolific winner in the 70’s for him was Chief Comment.

George and family got more serious in training dogs in the late 80’s and started a new property at Murray Bridge in the early 90’s where the breeding of the Gemtree line started with his foundation bitch Boundless Gem.

Lisa Rasmussen recalls George always being willing to help out and ‘checked’ many a dog for them and lots of other people. Lisa said George taught her husband Tony a lot about training and how to get dogs fit. That is the basis for all great dogs to be fit and healthy and they should race well from there.

George and Irene bred many litters producing some very good dogs including Gemtrea Sue (Brood Bitch of the Year), Gawler Trackstar winner Gemtrea Pixie and multiple Group Race winner Gemtrea Comet. Gemtrea Jemma was a former track record holder for the 731m 42.88 while Gemtrea Magician, who had a PB of 29.36 at Angle Park, was a favourite of Lisa Rasmussens to watch.

George had a particular love of stayers and his best-performed greyhound, Gem Supreme, won the Greyhound Of The Year in South Australia and was runner-up the following year in the early 1990’s. Gem Supreme won the Summer and was a runner-up in the Sydney Cup, in addition to winning every feature staying event in SA.

George and Irene had a small break from training and moved to the Yorke Peninsula where his second love of fishing took hold. George and Irene built their own house and had a great semi retirement, but the call of the dogs got them back. Their son Paul became more involved and they bred a few more litters with success coming from Adelaide Cup finalist Master Chaos and Gemtree Dynamo. George was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who asked and will be sadly missed by all and his family.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday 22nd January at Minge Chapel, 63 Swanport Road, Murray Bridge. Full details in Saturday’s Advertiser.
Instead of flowers the family ask that donations be made to animals affected by bushfires. These details will be with the funeral notice.

On behalf of the Board, Management, staff and all involved in the greyhound industry in South Australia, we offer our condolences to the Rehmann family.
Many thanks to Lisa Rasmussen and Irene Rehmann for helping us put this message together.

Changes to Mount Gambier Time Grading from January 2020

After consultation with industry and local participants from the Mount Gambier region, GRSA will trial a Best to Worst format for the Mount Gambier Thursday meetings.

GRSA has made this change to accommodate the strong nominations for this venue and attempting to give all greyhounds of all abilities the opportunity to compete.
Conditions for the Best to Worst meetings will be based on the greyhounds Time Rating. There will be a limit of 5 as to how fast a greyhound can be rated. Greyhounds rated 4.75 to 1 will not be eligible for this meeting but will be given preference into the Sunday meeting of that week so long as they nominate and there is a race available. Under this format GRSA will be able to include reserves for all races under the dissection of the grader. The more than 50% of fastest rated greyhound eligibility clause will not refer to Best to Worst Time Graded events.
Please contact the GRSA Grader for further information about Time Graded events.

Local match race series “The SA Eastar” in April
The SA Local Match Race series nicknamed “The SA Eastar” will be held on Thursday night, 9th April (Easter) at Angle Park. This is the start of School Holidays and Easter so a big crowd would be expected yet again and it will also be another opportunity for some innovation in regard to our coverage.

Eligibility for South Australia local greyhounds will be based around the Nationals conditions. They will need to be trained in SA 76 days out of the last 150 prior to the close of nominations.
Selection for this series will only be based around winning times at Angle Park. For greyhounds that have run over the 515m at Angle Park on any meeting since 1st December, 2019 their fastest winning time will be recognised and put them on the list for selection. GRSA will be producing a list that will be updated regularly so all trainers and connections are aware of where their greyhound stands up until the close of nominations on Monday, 6th April.
Greyhounds will have an opportunity to improve their times by solo trialling on a Thursday night (dates to be determined) over 515m. The greyhounds that will be eligible to trial are those that are ranked within the list (list of around 25 eligible greyhounds). Greyhounds can also get on the listing or improve their time by winning a race event at Angle Park on a Thursday or Monday night over the 515m..
GRSA will require nominations which will close on Monday, 6th April at 9am. The 8 fastest greyhounds nominated based on their time will be selected for the Local Match Race Series. Reserves will be declared like a final based on their time and nomination and if there is a scratching the 9 will go in first to the spot vacated.
The head to head matches will be decided based on the final listing and nominations. Match 1 will be 1 v 4, Match 2 will be 2 v 3, Match 3 will be 5 v 8 and Match 4 will be 6 v 7. There will be no manual selection from the Grader. The top 4 seeded greyhounds will be rewarded with more prizemoney.
The overall winner of the local Match Race series will be guaranteed a spot in the State of Origin Match race series (SA V Vic) in September so long as it is nominated and eligible to represent SA.
Winners of match races –
Match 1 – 1 v 4 $4,500 Match 2 – 2 v 3 $4,000 Match 3 – 5 v 8 $3,500 Match 4 – 6 v 7 $3,000
There will be $500 unplaced money.
Overall SA Eastar winner (based on overall times) - $6,000, second $2,500, third $1,500.

Stewards Notice - Deletion of LR 77
Greyhound Racing SA (GRSA) Stewards recently considered the merits of a historical Local Rule remaining in the Rules of Greyhound Racing SA Limited.
LR77(SA) prevented a penalty being placed on a person or a greyhound without an inquiry being conducted in accordance with the Rules. Stewards deemed this Local Rule was both limiting and impractical, and saw little utility in it being retained.
By deleting the Rule, for example, Stewards would have greater scope to act in relation to participants who chose to relinquish their registration rather than face disciplinary action, with the Controlling Body being able to issue a penalty without conducting a full inquiry process. This means that in the most serious of matters, a penalty can be placed upon a person to exclude them from our industry, in order to protect the interests of our sport.
Following a recommendation by the GRSA Stewards and the GRSA Integrity and Welfare Committee, the GRSA Board resolved the deletion of LR77(SA). As a result, GRSA has deleted LR77(SA). This change took effect as of 1 January 2020.
For more information contact the Integrity Department.

GRSA Animal Welfare Alert -  Gastrointestinal Illness

Greyhound Racing SA (GRSA) is notifying participants of a recent outbreak interstate of gastrointestinal illness amongst the greyhound population.
Whilst GRSA is not currently aware of any cases in this state, participants are reminded about the need to closely monitor the health of greyhounds in their care and ensure that good kennel hygiene is practised at all times.
Trainers are advised to monitor their greyhounds for the two most common signs of gastroenteritis, those being vomiting and diarrhea. Additional signs to watch for include:
• Dehydration due to fluid loss through vomiting or diarrhea
• Blood in vomit or faeces
• Nausea
• Depression
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
Participants who suspect a greyhound of having any gastrointestinal issues should immediately isolate the greyhound, disinfect their kennels and contact their veterinarian for advice. For more information, please contact the Integrity Department.

Mount Gambier Satisfactory Trials
Trainers are advised of a change to the booking of Satisfactory Trials at Mt. Gambier.
Mt Gambier hold trials on Tuesday and Saturday mornings with Satisfactory trials ONLY being conducted on Tuesdays and need to be booked with Barry Shepheard from the Club on 0419 824 512.
At Race meetings Satisfactory trials can be done when less than 12 races.  When there are 12 races these can be considered, however, the trainer will not be able to kennel and must take their greyhounds home straight after the trial. These race day trials will also need to be booked through Barry at the Club. GRSA administration staff will NOT accept these bookings and trainers will be directed to contact Barry Shepheard.

Time Graded and Pathway Events

The GRSA Racing Department wishes to advise of an update to the process of allocating reserves for Time Grading (worst-to-best) meetings.
Currently the Time Grading methodology does not allow for the allocation of reserves to the majority of races, therefore increasing the likelihood of reduced field sizes.
Under the new methodology, greyhounds will be grouped into races according to their Time Rating, including the reserves:
•        8 greyhounds for G-SIX racing (6 in the field plus 2 reserves)
•       10 greyhounds for traditional 8 dog racing (8 in the field plus 2 reserves)
A random draw will then be conducted to determine the two reserve greyhounds.
If only one race then reserves as per Time Rating Rankings. This process is demonstrated in a table available on the GRSA website and Kennel Capers.
This change will be implemented for all Time Grading meetings from 1st January, 2020.
