TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

We certainly have a good even spread throughout the night of racing here at headquarters, the highlights being the four heats of the SA St Leger Series, races (1 to 4), the quality of youngsters that are engaged are first class so it makes for an interesting series. As always all 11 races are Trifecta and First Four events.

Race 1 - Spring Vinnie was very impressive here last start when winning in a slick BON 29.67, he has won his last 4 all in good fashion and looks the measuring stick in this. Established past 2 wins have been in sub 30 and she has only missed a cheque at this venue once in 8 runs, she is the danger. Add Long Gully Barny and Miss Breakout for the minors. Box up 2.3.4.8

Race 2 - This certainly is a terrific betting affair as there is a heap of chances, Firetail is my top pick here as she gets a chance to lead from her draw, she won here 3 runs back in 29.95 and with moderate beginners around her should be right in the mix. Wooden Tiger is very smart when on song, he can be hit and miss on box rise but if he was close enough early would take beating. Miss Takiri loves a wide draw and is a class act and should start the punters elect. Box up 3.4.6.8

Race 3 - The Don Turner chaser Rouge is the well-drawn runner, he has won 2 of his past 5 and should be able to lead and win. Boss McLaren has been freshened and if he is able to possie up close he would take a power of beating as he is very strong. Add the pacey Power Burner along with Hot Sophie for the First Four. Box Up 2.6.7.8

Race 4 - The last of the 4 heats and its very hard to go past the flying Coorong Lucy, she is the class runner and with a personal best of 29.51 here she loves this circuit. Hot Desert Storm is racing well along with Double By Design for the minors. Box Up 2.4.7.8

Race 5 - This is the 600m of the night and we will go with the Robyn Mackellar chaser Holy Reign in this, she flew late to run an eye catching 2nd here last start when missing the kick, she normally steps well and is boxed to win. Oakvale Magic has strong 500m form so the extra trip shouldn’t be a worry. Box Up 1.2.3.8

Race 6 - There looks to be several chances in this so we will go with a bit of value, Emerley Zero loves to fill a place and gets his chance to greet the judge from the rails draw tonight. Bailey Rocks is a smart performer on her night, she will need luck early and looks well graded. Box up 1.2.3.5.

Race 7 - Tough event this one so it will be well worth having a go at the First Four, Castle Ruins has to be included on his recent efforts, he hasn’t missed a place in 4 of his last 5 and looks well suited in this. Viking Vince has the draw and can bounce back from his last start. Diamond Lee has claims. Box Up 1.4.6.7

Race 8 - Alfieri is the one to beat in this, he has struggled at his past couple and is a lot better than recent form suggests, if he steps he has a PB of 29.50 at this circuit. Boss Three Fifty has handy Murray Bridge form over the short, he is certainly the value runner in this. Box Up 1.6.7.8.

Race 9 - Go Quantum has had a couple of weeks of and is a chance of bouncing back tonight, he won here 3 runs back in 30.01 from a rails draw and should go close in this. Major Major won his Maiden in good fashion last week and cant be left out of our Trifecta, add Westrock Outlaw who will be flying home late. Box Up 1.2.6.8

Race 10 - I like the book ends in this with Master Chaos getting the nod, he is very smart when out in front and should go close. Nirimba Pirate flew the lids here last start to lead and win in good time, he will need to do the same from box 8. Add Slippers Away as our value runner. Box Up 1.4.7.8

Race 11 - We end the night with a distance event and with only the 3 starters, My Boy Bean is my pick he has been runner up here at his past couple and should find this more to his liking, Joint Interest to run the Quinella. 7.5.3

LOCAL NEWS

ST LEGER HEATS TONIGHT

Four terrific heats have been drawn tonight for the 2020 SA St Leger series at Angle Park. There is plenty of depth throughout each heat with most greyhounds having strong chances in qualifying for next weeks $11,435 final on Thursday, 20th February.

The first heat is race 1 due to start at 6.40pm SA time and features Spring Vinnie for Greg Board shooting for 5 wins in a row against Established for Cameron Butcher who has been sizzling in her last two wins.

Race 2 is heat 2 and features an evenly match affair with Oakvale Elite for Nathan Wilson doing battle with Firetail for Lauren Harris, American Man for Lisa Rasmussen and lightly raced Wooden Tiger for Petar Jovanovic.

Race 3 is heat 3 and also has plenty of depth with Rouge for Don Tuner taking on Boss McLaren for Don Foster and Power Burner for Maurie Kiley.

Race 4 caps of all four heats and see’s the series favourite step out in Coorong Lucy for Cameron Butcher. The scintillating speedster has won her last three races and it would seem only bad luck would stop her winning streak continuing tonight.

The first two from each heat will qualify for next week’s final with the box draw to be conducted oncourse after the running of race 5 tonight.

It will be a big couple of months of racing in March and April for the Murray Bridge and Mount Gambier Clubs when they conduct their Cup meetings.

The Murray Bridge Cup heats will be conducted on Friday, 6th March (as the Murray Bridge Speedway is on the Sunday night, Murray Bridge and Gawler have swapped) with the $15,000 to the winner (listed event) to be run on Sunday night, 15th March.

The Mount Gambier Cup heats have moved back one week to assist with scheduling and will be on Sunday, 29th March with the $15,000 to the winner (listed event) final on Sunday, 5th April.

GRSA will continue a couple of bonuses to link both events which will include a $5,000 bonus if the same dog can win both the Murray Bridge Cup and Mount Gambier Cup and a $5,000 trainer bonus if the same trainer can win both Cups (SA or Interstate or different dogs).

MURRAY BRIDGE TRIAL CHANGES IN MARCH

In March due to the speedway being conducted on Sundays at Murray Bridge on two occasions we will have two Fridays at Murray Bridge during the month and two Sundays at Gawler. These dates will be Friday 6th and 27th March for Murray Bridge and Sunday night for Gawler on 8th and 29th March. With this being the case the trial days will be swapped with Gawler trialling on Friday 6th and 27th and Murray Bridge trialling on Thursday 5th and 26th March.

GRSA also advise that from March there will no longer be officiating staff available to clear greyhounds for STAT and Qualy trials on the fortnightly Tuesday nights at Murray Bridge

GRSA will send an official to Murray Bridge on a monthly basis. This presents an opportunity to also include the Straight Track for Qualys and STAT’S. With this being on a monthly basis STAT’s and Qualys will be conducted on the Friday morning trial session which has both tracks.

The trial session for March will be Friday 20th March.

MOUNT GAMBIER SATISFACTORY TRIALS

Trainers are advised of a change to the booking of Satisfactory Trials at Mt. Gambier.

Mt Gambier hold trials on Tuesday and Saturday mornings with Satisfactory trials ONLY being conducted on Tuesdays and need to be booked with Barry Shepheard from the Club on 0419 824 512.

At Race meetings Satisfactory trials can be done when less than 12 races.  When there are 12 races these can be considered, however, the trainer will not be able to kennel and must take their greyhounds home straight after the trial. These race day trials will also need to be booked through Barry at the Club. GRSA administration staff will NOT accept these bookings and trainers will be directed to contact Barry Shepheard.

TIME GRADED AND PATHWAY EVENTS (FOR ALL EVENTS)

The GRSA Racing Department wishes to advise of an update to the process of allocating reserves for Time Grading (worst-to-best) meetings.

Currently the Time Grading methodology does not allow for the allocation of reserves to the majority of races, therefore increasing the likelihood of reduced field sizes.
Under the new methodology, greyhounds will be grouped into races according to their Time Rating, including the reserves:

•  8 greyhounds for G-SIX racing (6 in the field plus 2 reserves)

•  10 greyhounds for traditional 8 dog racing (8 in the field plus 2 reserves)

A random draw will then be conducted to determine the two reserve greyhounds.

If only one race then reserves as per Time Rating Rankings. This process is demonstrated in a table available on the GRSA website and Kennel Capers.

This change will be implemented for all Time Grading meetings from 1st January, 2020.

CHANGES TO MOUNT GAMBIER TIME GRADING FROM JANUARY 2020

After consultation with industry and local participants from the Mount Gambier region, GRSA will continue the trial of the Best to Worst format for the Mount Gambier Thursday meetings.

GRSA has made this change to accommodate the strong nominations for this venue and attempting to give all greyhounds of all abilities the opportunity to compete. This will generally be run on a fortnight basis however if there are not 12 races being conducted for all meetings GRSA will consider reviewing this process.
Conditions for the Best to Worst meetings will be based on the greyhounds Time Rating. There will be a limit of 5 as to how fast a greyhound can be rated. Greyhounds rated 4.75 to 1 will not be eligible for this meeting but will be given preference into the Sunday meeting of that week so long as they nominate and there is a race available. Under this format GRSA will be able to include reserves for all races under the dissection of the grader. The more than 50% of fastest rated greyhound eligibility clause will not refer to Best to Worst Time Graded events.

Please contact the GRSA Grader for further information about Time Graded events.
