TELLING THE TAIL

By The Shadow

Tonight, here at headquarters we have a terrific 11 event card ahead of us, we see the return of 2020 Greyhound of the Year winner Sir Truculent in race 9, he has been taking on the best in Australia in recent runs and returns to his home track where he has won 28 times. Other highlights are three events over the 600m, races (4 to 6) these certainly make for terrific betting affairs. Don’t forget all races are Trifecta and First Four events.

Race 1 - Let’s kick off with an early winner in Buddy Guy, he proved far too good for them here last week when leading throughout for a 29.82 win and is drawn for a bold showing once again. The dangers look to be Power Burner who is racing well and American Man who is a must for the Trifecta punters. Box Up 1.2.4.5

Race 2 - This is a wide-open affair and I like the outside two in Victa Maggie who is in the leading kennel of Tony Rasmussen and Way Too Much who has been showing early pace and is capable of leading. Both can figure. Springvale Cher will be running on. Box Up 2.4.6.8

Race 3 - Gavin Harris always has a handy one in his kennel and Dashing Jinx wasn’t disgraced when 2nd here on debut in good time, he is well drawn in this and we will put him on top. Break Time is well bred and the kennel doesn’t normally produce them until they are more than ready. Son Of Haka found trouble on his debut and is well worth a wager. Box Up 2.4.5.7

Race 4 - This is the 1st of the 600m events and I like Salt And Pepper who has the gun draw, he failed to beat a runner home at his latest run from out wide but looks one of the improvers in this. Joint Interest will find this more to her liking, she loves to run a place and will be very competitive. Bedrock Fred won over the sprint two runs back in quick time and can’t be overlooked. Box Up 1.4.5.7

Race 5 - Victa Saige has been racing well over the sprint, she has early pace and the extra distance will enhance her chances. Snow Superstar has won her past three at Mount Gambier when well supported, she is amongst the better chances, Allegra is still a Maiden after 49 starts she has been placed over this trip several times and can pinch a place again. Box Up 1.2.7.8

Race 6 - This is a high-quality affair, and we will stick with a last start winner Lily Pad, she carved out a slick 29.75 run here last start and her recent form has been very good. Miss Bellawood is well drawn and is back in distance here, she has won here in quick time in the past and looks well placed in this. Fantastic Shell is another who is well drawn and can’t be overlooked. Box Up 1.2.6.8

Race 7 - There are a heap of chances in this and it makes for a good betting race so we will aim at the first four, Blue Tick Fern has early dash, she led here last start only to be run down, she will find this more to her liking and is major player. Invincibility is another who shows pace from the lids and is a must. Barmah McLaren and Mahogany Row can run into the placings. Box Up 3.6.7.8

Race 8 - Classic McLaren was well supported here last start when 2nd behind Buddy Guy, he can handle the wide draw and is very strong. Shadow Burner has been racing well with a win over the 600m and his recent sprint form has been more than handy. Velocity Dory is always running on and is a must for our Trifecta. Box up 2.4.7.8

Race 9 - This is the distance affair and as mentioned earlier we see the return of the Wally Harkins' champion Sir Truculent, he has been well travelled of late with wins in Brisbane and his last two runs have been outstanding when placed at The Meadows against the cream of the crop of stayers from around Australia. He looks far too smart for these. Springvale Shine and Springvale Anna can fill the placings. 8 from 1.2.4

Race 10 - Dakota Hummer has been in outstanding form of late winning four of his past five including a 29.99 win here last start, he looks the likely leader here and will be the one to catch. Burning Nitro has been runner up at her last three and is working towards a win and we will put Naja Naja in for the minors. Box Up 1.2.4.7

Race 11 - Its always nice to go home on a winner and Victa Kurt will appreciate this event tonight, he has been racing against some quality youngsters in the Launching pad series and has the pace to lead and win here. Iranian Girl is the danger from a good draw along with Beers With Geoff. Box Up 1.2.5.7

THE EASTAR – MATCH RACE SERIES AT GAWLER

The local South Australian match race series, nicknamed ‘The Eastar’, has been shifted to Gawler due to the track update of Angle Park, which is expected to be well underway by April 2021.

The series will be held on Easter Sunday night, 4th April over the 531m. A big local crowd is expected for the meeting given the timing of the event and the public holiday the following day.

Greyhounds competing must be South Australian, based on the Nationals Championships conditions, which require greyhounds to be domiciled in the State for at least 76 days of the last 150 days prior to the close of nominations.  Selection for this series will be for the fastest greyhounds nominated, based on their best time over the Gawler 531m distance since 1st October 2020 (regardless of their placing). GRSA will regularly update and publish a leaderboard (top 25), so all trainers and connections are aware of where their greyhound stands up until the close of nominations on Wednesday, 31st March 2021.

The head-to-head matches will be decided based on the final leaderboard, with no manual intervention by the Grader, as per the following:

·       Match 1 – Seed 1 v Seed 4   (1st $2,750 - 2nd $350)
·       Match 2 – Seed 2 v Seed 3   (1st $2,500 - 2nd $350)
·       Match 3 – Seed 5 v Seed 8   (1st $2,250 - 2nd $350)
·       Match 4 – Seed 6 v Seed 7   (1st $2,000 - 2nd $350)

The prizemoney for the overall Eastar placegetters (based on individual times in the match races) will be:

  • 1st $4,500 – 2nd $1,300 – 3rd $650

The overall winner of the Gawler Eastar will be guaranteed a spot in the State of Origin Match race series (SA V Vic) to be held at the newly developed Angle Park track in September, as long as it is nominated and eligible to represent SA. As an added incentive the winner of the State of Origin Match Race Series guarantees itself a spot in the Group 1 Adelaide Cup in October and if successful will be guaranteed a spot in the Group 1 TOPGUN at the Meadows in November.

Current leader board – as at 11th March, 2021
