TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

Tonight we have a massive 12 event programme and with 2 heats of the 2020 SA Oaks, added to that we have 3 heats of the 2020 SA Derby. The opening event is a very strong 600m, as usual it makes for a terrific night of racing here at headquarters.

Race 1 - The first of the night is a 600m and Sir Truculent was never in the hunt over the sprint here last week, he has a strong record over this trip and will be very hard to beat. Miss Takiri is one at good odds who is our value runner, she has early pace and has won in quick times in the past. Toora Ziggy and Golden Night for our First Four. Box Up 1.4.7.8

Race 2 - This is the 1st of the SA Oaks heats and Weblec Whirl has been racing well in Victoria with wins at Geelong and The Meadows, she looks one of the better chances. Love And Thunder was a last start winner at Geelong and can run a cheeky race. Add Oakvale Style who will be running on late. Box Up 2.3.6.7

Race 3 - The 2nd of the Oaks heats My Girl Kizzy won 2 runs back at The Meadows over the 600m, she is drawn for a bold showing in this. Marlee Jaye is quick early and is a must for Trifecta punters along with Hali’s Girl who is shooting for 4 in a row. Box Up 1.2.6.8

Race 4 - There is certainly a lot of early pace in this so we will go with Cawbourne Scar, he has been in the money 8 of his 11 runs here and with luck can open up a handy lead. Wooden Tiger will be thundering home, he is a smart performer when on song and will be very hard to beat if he is close enough early. Box Up 1.2.4.7

Race 5 - This is the 1st of the SA Derby heats and Major Major is the experienced runner in this, he has won his past two in good fashion and looks the measuring stick from the draw. Fly For Trix has a terrific strike rate of 8 wins from just his 12 outings, he won here 3 starts back in a sizzling 29.53 and is the HUGE danger on form.  Sentinel McLaren for the Trifecta. Box Up 2.4.5.7

Race 6 - Coorong Nugget is drawn to win the 2nd heat of the Derby, he led them a merry dance here last start when saluting in 29.84 and won from this draw 4 runs back in 29.70 he is our top pick. Oakvale Blue has been right in the mix in recent runs and is the danger. Woodside Zulu has been missing the start of late but is very strong he can run into the placings. Box Up 1.2.3.6

Race 7 - This is the 3rd and final heat of the 2020 SA Derby and Hank The Hustler has been racing in terrific form over the 600m here of late, he is well drawn and will prove very hard to beat with a clear run. Weblec Jet won 2 starts back at the Meadows, the Victorian sprinter has won 4 form 10 and is amongst the chances from his wide draw. Private and Classic McLaren for the minors. Box Up 2.4.5.7

Race 8 - Sunset Milo was a massive run here last Thursday, he missed the kick then mustered to win by 7 lengths in 29.93, he is unbeaten since transferring to SA and will be hard to beat again. The value runner is Emerley Zero, he has won his last 4 all in good fashion and quick times, he is a faultless beginner and is a chance of pinching this. Alfieri cant be overlooked and is working towards a win. Box Up 1.2.7.8

Race 9 - The Cameron Butcher kennel looks to have another handy one in Jacks Well, the youngster has only had the 4 starts for 2 wins and a placing, he has early pace and will be hard to beat in this. Oakvale Impact has been mixing his distances, he is another with a bright future and is right in this. Select Hypo won 1st up and will keep on improving. Box Up 1.2.7.8

Race 10 - Rushes is my top pick in this, he won on debut from this draw in 29.80 then was never in it when unplaced here last week, he is right back in grade and is drawn for a bold showing. Couture is a strong type who stormed home to score at Gawler last start he is well drawn and will be flying home late. Box Up 1.4.7.8

Race 11 - This certainly is a wide open affair with the two main chances being Power Stone and Cawbourne Boomer, both are hard to split and they have handy short course form. Our Boy Wolf is another who has been in form he won three on the trot over the short and is capable of surprising. Box Up 1.2.4.7

Race 12 - The old fella Boss McLaren is drawn to send us home on a winning note, he won at Murray Bridge two runs back in a BOD 25.60 over the 455, he is back in grade and looks one of the better bets of the night. I’m Top Girl is a must for Trifecta punters she will be running on and is a definite place chance. Hot Sambuca and Hot Zorro for the First Four. Box Up 1,4,5,8

INTERSTATE GREYHOUNDS COMING TO SA FOR FEATURE EVENTS

Following Government advice since COVID-19 restrictions were put in place from earlier in the year GRSA have not been accepting any nominations from trainers domiciled in other States and this remains the case at present.

It is possible for Interstate greyhounds to compete in SA, however, they must be transferred into the kennels of a trainer domiciled in SA.

As the COVID-19 situation can change rapidly, GRSA will continue to update all participants of any changes to racing restrictions.

KURT DONSBERG ON THE INTERVIEW ROUNDS

GRSA is happy to advise that on course photographer Kurt Donsberg will add yet another string to his bow by doing some pre-race and post-race interviews with trainers to be published on social media adding extra exposure for our industry.

He will mainly do this for upcoming feature races staring with tonight’s Oaks and Derby heats meeting. These interviews will only be a couple of quick questions and last for about 30 seconds just to give an extra insight at the race meeting which GRSA fully supports.

GREYHOUND RACING SOUTH AUSTRALIA - 2020 SA COUNTRY CUP

Below are details of how and where greyhounds can qualify for the $6,430 SA Country Cup Final (G-SIX), to be run at Angle Park over 515 metres on Adelaide Cup Final night Friday, 9th October 2020.

Conditions

• All South Australian Greyhound Racing Clubs outside of Angle Park will conduct Heats, or nominate greyhounds from which the Greyhound Racing SA Grading Department will choose two representatives. These meetings are Gawler Provincial 2, Murray Bridge One Turn Provincial 1 and Mount Gambier Provincial 2. (Performances at Gawler Provincial 1 meetings are not eligible for consideration)

• The event is open to all South Australian greyhounds that are not above Grade 5 at Angle Park (APK City A & APM City B meetings only) over 515 metres at the time of nomination. Winner of each event takes a penalty including the Final.

There are no Special Exceptions this year as ALL greyhounds must be SA trained to be eligible:

o  A South Australian trained greyhound is defined as one that has been racing in SA for a period of not less than 3 out of the 6 months immediately prior to the time of nomination.

•  The trainer can only qualify for one of the Clubs.

• The trainer must have trained the greyhound nominated for the previous 3 months.

• Graders’ discretion will be used to determine the best nominated.

• The greyhound must have started at least 2 times in the last 12 months at the track it is attempting to represent.

• There will be a maximum of two Heats per Club with the winners of each Heat qualifying. If there is only one Heat conducted then the first two placegetters will qualify.

• The two reserves will be determined firstly by a ballot of the second placegetters from all Heats. The third placegetters will then be considered by ballot if required. If a Heat was not conducted at the track, then that track is not included in the ballot. Should a greyhound be withdrawn prior to the ballot, the next placed greyhound from that Club’s Heat will be selected.

• Once a greyhound has qualified from a Qualifying Heat, it is not eligible to compete at another track in this series, unless there are insufficient nominations to fill the field.

• Once qualified for the Country Cup Final the greyhound will be ineligible for the Adelaide Cup series or any other race on this Cup Final night.

• Lead up Heats may be up to 8 greyhounds, however, the Final on Adelaide Cup night will be a G-SIX Final

SATURDAY MORNING FORTNIGHTLY MEETINGS

We recently introduced the fortnightly Saturday morning meeting at Angle Park.

To accommodate this meeting through our weekly schedule we made some changes to the amount of races run during and after this meeting at other venues. We have changed to all G-SIX accept for feature and specific races. We moved the Wednesday meetings to be back to back Straight track and then Angle Park on a 3 week rotation. We have made the Saturday morning meetings Time Graded with alternate conditions as this is the biggest group or greyhounds, with programming crucial to accommodate the weekly schedule.

Our next meeting will be on Saturday morning 19th September with the below program –

Timed Graded Meeting-“Worst to Best” rating. Greyhounds graded into 3 categories. Maidens, 1-4 wins & 5 or more wins. Specific grades of greyhounds are not considered except for Maidens. Races–N/P with Pathway Prizemoney. Reserves will be determined by Grader. There will be No Guarding. Refer to “Time Based Grading” published conditions.

$815 Six Fastest Forward (1-4 Wins) Heats – 388m (Max 4 Heats - $1,230 Final Monday 26/9/20)

(Selected from Worst to Best of this category. Final field will be a 6-dog field plus reserves, comprising of the greyhounds running the fastest times in the heats, regardless of their finishing position in those heats)

• Nominations close Tuesday, 15th September at 9.00am.

ADJUSTMENT TO WEEKLY SCHEDULE’S

GRSA advised that they would be restricting the number of races run each week to accommodate the weekly schedule with the introduction of the fortnightly Saturday morning.

This has been working on a basic 12 races in the first week and then 10 in the second under certain conditions.

With the encouraging nomination numbers across the week recently GRSA will change to 12 races in the first week and 11 in the second. This will take affect from tomorrow’s grading with the Angle Wednesday 16th September having 11 races instead of 10.

HEATS CLASSIC 2020 PRELUDE (1)

The heats of Classic 2020 Prelude (1) will be run on Monday, 21st September with the $4,000 final on Monday, 28th September. This series is for greyhounds paid up for Classic 2020.

Nominations for the Heats close Thursday, 17th September with GRSA at 9.00am.

SA MATCH RACE SERIES ON SEPTEMBER 24

Due to border restrictions the normal State of Origin Match Race series (SA V VIC) has been postponed for 2020. Instead SA will still run a Match Race series for the best greyhounds nominated.

Conditions -

• 515m Special Event - No Penalties Apply • Best 8 greyhounds in match race conditions

• 4 match races worth $2,500 - $3,250 each (runner-up $350) with overall winner receiving $5,000, 2nd place $1,430 and 3rd place $715.

  • Nominations close Monday 21st September at 9am.

The head to head matches will be decided based on the final listing and nominations. Match 1 will be 1 v 4, Match 2 will be 2 v 3, Match 3 will be 5 v 8 and Match 4 will be 6 v 7. The Grader will then have to randomly draw the boxes (1 or 3) that each greyhound starts from. The most prizemoney will be allocated to the highest rated match.

GRSA will also have exclusive footage from inside the boxes of the greyhounds with has been a real highlight in past years. GRSA conducted the Eastar Match Race series in April where Alfieri won for Bill Wudarczyk in a sizzling 29.54. As part of that series, for winning, Alfieri would be guaranteed a spot as an SA representative in the State Of Origin. Whilst that series has been postponed GRSA will honour this condition with accepting Alfieri as one of the 8 greyhounds for the SA Match Race series so long as he is nominated. GRSA will continue the condition that the overall winner of the SA Match Race series will be guaranteed a spot in the Group 1 Adelaide Cup on Friday, 9th October.

GRSA PLAN TO DISSEMINATE SCRATCHINGS IN A MORE TIMELY MANNER

Historically, it has been GRSA’s standard practice to wait until after the appointed scratching time to officially release all the scratchings.

GRSA would not release any scratchings for a meeting until this time. However, in the current climate with many wagering organisations wanting to open markets early on our races, they are not able to do so due to greyhounds potentially being scratched for injury, illness, ineligibility etc. This can affect potential revenue back to the industry with persons not able to invest, or investing and having the market alter when scratchings are finalised. This will also provide greater transparency for trainers, staff and our business.

For a trial period of 3 months it will be GRSA’s intention upon receiving a scratching from a trainer to input this into OzChase at that time, which will then be made public through the GRSA website. Once the greyhound has been scratched by the trainer and made public it is considered as being withdrawn. This is not uncommon practice with other States doing the same thing. For greyhounds that become ineligible for a race meeting due to winning a Maiden event, racing on consecutive days, offending during the run or being injured on the night etc and engaged in another race meeting, GRSA staff will automatically scratch the greyhound (as it is ineligible) at either the completion of the meeting when finalised by the stewards or the next working day. We have always encouraged trainers to scratch these greyhounds that have become ineligible for their next engagements, however, this is not always the case with staff waiting to withdraw them at the appointed time. For trainers in certain circumstances that may wish to appeal an offence with their greyhound engaged in another event then they would be required to flag that intent with the stewards on the day.

The benefits of this change will provide -

  • Transparency across our meetings
  • Correct information in real time
  • Wagering companies can field up to date markets
  • Allows punters to wager with confidence
  • Allows for wagering dollars not to be tied up until after  the ‘All Clear ‘of a race if a selection was scratched

This will take effect from Monday, 24th August 2020.
