TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

Tonight’s feature event is the 2023 Shane McQueen (race 8) on the program over the 595m, it has certainly turned into a terrific field and has a $10,000 to winners cheque on the end. The two  semi winners from last week which I liked are Ravers Army who continued his winning form and now has won his last five on end, he only needs a clean start to take beating again and Could Be King who won from this draw in the BON 34.42, they are the better chances. Add Miss Scallywag who can show early pace on occasions along with Dash Of Blue for the First Four. Box Up 1.3.6.7

The star SA chaser is in race 3 at 6.49pm (SA time) and has drawn box 1 and should prove very hard to beat with him being listed a short priced favourite at $1.40. It will be so exciting to see him compete interstate but also some of his kennel mates in Victa Marli (race 2 no 7 @ 6.31pm), Live It (race 7 no 7 @ 8.16pm) and Victa Alby (race 8 no 2 @ 8.40pm).

LOW GRADE RACE FOR THURSDAYS AT ANGLE PARK

In an effort to ensure we are programming 12 races each Thursday night at Angle Park GRSA has introduced a low grade race for some Thursday nights. These races are for Grade 5 greyhounds over 530m that have a low WPS (Weighted Points Score). Prizemoney will be slightly less than a normal Grade 5, however, these races will be non-penalty. There will be no guarding, no reserves and only one 8 greyhound race. This should provide encouragement for those trainers who have 500m+ greyhounds but feel they cannot compete on a normal Thursday night due to current form. We are hoping to draw from a different pool of greyhounds and GRSA would encourage trainers to nominate.

$3,505 Special event Grade 5 (worst to best) – 530m (One 8 dog field will be graded from the Weighted Points Score table of Grade 5 pool of greyhounds worst to best grading. No guarding and no reserves. Trainers cannot nominate for this event specifically. Non Penalty)

The next programmed event is on Thursday, 1st June.

• Nominations for the Heats close Monday, 5th June with GRSA at 9.00am

GRSA has also continued with the 1 – 4 win Time Graded Heats on a Saturday morning over 530m into a Thursday night Final, however, with the introduction of the race on Thursday night, in May the 5+ 530m Time Graded events will only be run if insufficient nominations for the meeting (there will be no Heats for this pool of greyhounds).

GRSA will also continue running Heats at Murray Bridge, Angle Park Monday and Gawler into a Thursday night Final where the program allows to draw from a different pool of greyhounds over 500m.

MURRAY BRIDGE STAT TRIALS

Please be advised Satisfactory Trials at Murray Bridge on Wednesday nights will be conducted on a fortnightly basis due to staffing issues. The next fortnightly opportunity will be Wednesday, 7th June.

NO MURRAY BRIDGE TRIALLING OVER JUNE LONG WEEKEND

GRSA advise on Monday 12th June (Public Holiday) due to staff unavailability there will be no trials at Murray Bridge. (Gawler will be able to trial on this day as GRSA has available staff)

MODEL TRAIN FAIR OVER JUNE LONG WEEKEND WITH RACING ON SATURDAY MORNING

GRSA advise that the Model Train Fair will be conducted at the Angle Park venue over the June Long weekend. The race meeting scheduled for Saturday morning the 10th June will proceed as normal and both events should not have much impact on each other however participants should be mindful of this on the day.

Timed Graded Meeting - “Worst to Best” rating. Greyhounds graded into 3 categories. Maidens, 1-4 wins & 5 or more wins. (5 + win 530m will only be considered if needed) Specific grades of greyhounds are not considered except for Maidens. Races–N/P with Pathway Prizemoney. Reserves will be determined by Grader. There will be No Guarding. Refer to “Time Based Grading” published conditions.

• Nominations close Wednesday, 7th June with GRSA at 9.00am

BAYROAD QUEEN STAYERS HEATS IN JUNE

The $6,790 Heats of the Bayroad Queen Stayer’s Cup will be run over 730m on Thursday, 15th June . The $14,275 Final will be run on Thursday, 22nd June .

CLASSIC AND BREEDERS FUTURITY PAYMENTS

Owners of SA Bred greyhounds are reminded that the next batch of Futurity payments are due on Friday, 16th June 2023.

The payments due are:

Classic 2023 – Final Payment (Pups born July 21 to December 21) This payment is for greyhounds for which the Second Sustaining Payment was made last December. The Final Payment is $121 per greyhound.

Breeders 2024 – Second Payment (Pups born January 22 to June 22)

This payment is for greyhounds for which the First Sustaining Payment was made last December. The Second Sustaining Payment is $55 per pup or a Final Payment of $121 can be made at this stage.

Classic 2024 – First Payment (Pups born July 22 to December 22)

This First Payment is due for Classic 2024. All SA Bred greyhounds born in the above period are eligible to make this payment. The First Payment is $27.50 per pup or a “one-off” Final Payment of $121 can be made at this stage.

To assist all owners of Futurity eligible pups, reminders will be sent out over the coming days. It is perhaps a good idea to make the payment as soon as you can, so it does not slip your mind and the closing date passes. If you have sold a pup/s we would ask if you can forward on the information to the new owner. If you have not received a reminder by the end of this month and you think you should have, contact Caralyn Fielden as soon as possible.

ADDITIONAL TUESDAY NIGHT MEETING AT ANGLE PARK

After consultation and support by Sky Racing, GRSA has programmed an extra race meeting on the weekly schedule for the new season, with Tuesday night at Angle Park now on the calendar. This extra meeting will be shown on Sky 2 and will be for Category 3 prizemoney. It will also be for short course greyhounds (342m) exclusively to not affect 530m+ at Angle Park meetings on Monday (Category 2) and Thursday (Category 1). GRSA may initially have to utilise more 6 dog fields to spread out our numbers across the weekly schedule, however, this will only be determined at the time.  These meetings will be graded events and as we haven’t run this category with greyhounds taking a grade (Saturday mornings are Non Penalty) it will be like a new venue with most grades being Maiden, Grade 6 and Grade 5 to start with.

Nominations will close on the Friday before, the same time as Gawler Wednesday. This does avoid Angle Park Monday and Murray Bridge Tuesday which close on the Thursday.

Trials at Angle Park will move from Tuesday night to Wednesday night and be run the same time as the Murray Bridge trials.

The implementation date is scheduled for 1st August, 2023.

RACING AND TRIALLING FREQUENCY – STARTED 1ST FEBRUARY

GRSA has adopted a new local rule in regard to frequency of racing and trialling which took effect on Wednesday 1st February 2023. The update local rule is below -

69A  Racing and trialling frequency

(1)     In this rule:

Race has the same meaning given to this term in R9 of the GAR.

Trial means a satisfactory trial, or a qualifying trial as defined in R9 of the GAR.

(2)    A greyhound will only be permitted to start in –

(a)    No more than a combined total of 2 race and trial starts in any 7-day period; and,

(b)    No more than a combined total of 7 race and trial starts in any 28-day period.

(3)    This sub-rule commences on a date to be fixed by Stewards’ Notice.

The intent of this rule is to monitor and regulate the frequency of races and official trials of greyhounds, to ensure adequate rest time is given between events.  The rule is similar to one in effect in Western Australia.  We have automated the Ozchase Racing system to be able to monitor this rule.  The rule is self-explanatory.  A greyhound must not start more than 2 times (races or trials combined) in any 7-day period.  Further, a greyhound must not start more than 7-times (races or trials combined) in any 28-day period.

Any attempt to nominate a greyhound outside these parameters will be flagged by the OzChase system. If a greyhound gains a start from reserve deeming it ineligible under this rule for its next engagement or it competes in another state prior to racing back in SA then the greyhound will come out.

**Racing Administration staff will scratch these greyhounds acting under this rule without notification. (the responsibility rests with the trainer to ensure they do not contravene this rule)

**For clarity if a greyhound races on Sunday, Wednesday then Sunday it will be eligible. The first day counts as day 1 and therefore resets on the Saturday.
