TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

By gosh, Thursday nights come around quickly and we have another strong 12-event program ahead of us, we have two open maidens that start the night which makes it very interesting for punters as they make their race debut. Other exciting events are a very smart grade 3 and 4 ( race 7 ) and a distance affair which I love, (race 10 ). All races are Trifecta and First Four events and let's hope we can come out the other side on a winning note.

Race 1
- This is the first of the maidens, the Rasmussen team have two 1st starters both from the same litter and are sure to be well tried on their debut so we must keep them safe. The Barry Stewart team have another from interstate with Fantastic Eddy, the kennel has a solid record 1st up. Add Bad Ringo who has shown pace here at his 2 SA runs. Box Up 2.4.5.7

Race 2 - The 2nd of the open maidens and the Rasmussen team have another of the Fernando Bale / Victa Polly litter engaged, he is well drawn and the market will be our best guide. Cynogriffon has been placed here at his last 3 and could show up. Your Girl Airlie is well drawn. Box Up 1.2.4.8

Race 3 - This looks like a race in two with Sutton Prince being the pacesetter and Midnight Blast running on strongly, both are racing well and are the main chances. John Dutton is very capable when on song and is amongst the better chances. Box up 2.4.5.8

Race 4 - This is a wide-open affair I have gone with the Steve Brook trained Closer To Rain on her last run here where she won over the 595M, the draw will help here and she is a chance. The old fellow Classic McLaren will be running on strongly and has been in the money at his last 5. Box Up 2.4.7.8

Race 5 - Gondola was unplaced at her debut at Gawler when well supported she had handy form back in NSW and is the improver here despite the wide draw. Clear View has been in form and has a nice draw she is very capable of showing up. Box Up 1.3.7.8

Race 6 - The two chances here are Yankee Costanza and the inform Dashing Jinx, both have been racing well and should be in the firing line when it counts. Swinging Forts has won his past two at Gawler over the short, he steps up over the 530M here and is amongst the place chances. Box Up 2.3.4.8

Race 7 - Sunset Toxic will be very hard to beat again on his last start win at Gawler in good time, he has the pace to lead and is in form. Got The Swagger was nutted right on the line here last run he has been very impressive since arriving here in SA. Came And Went didn’t handle the heavy going here last week and is a class act when on the lure. Box Up 1.2.4.6

Race 8 - We are over the 595M here and Mallee Magic can return to the winners circle here, he has 4 wins from 7 starts this trip and should be on the pace early. Impress Us has form here and is the danger. Fantastic Dixie has been in the money at her last five and is very close to a win. Box Up 1.2.3.6

Race 9 - The Kim Johnstone kennel has a very handy one here in Rushes Raw, he was a last-start winner here in a smart 30.17 and he can handle the wide draw here and will take a beating. Stranger Tides is a chance as is Captain Larry who has terrific form at Mount Gambier. Box Up 1.4.7.8

Race 10 - This is over the 730M and Victa Haydn gave Fantastic Radley a big scare here last week in the National Distance Final when 2nd in good time, he looks far too good here on that run. Victa Reid is drawn to figure and can run the quinella for the kennel. 5 from 1.3.7

Race 11 - Springview Force has won his past two here leading throughout on both occasions, he looks hard to beat again and loves this circuit. Love My Key is my each-way value of the night, he is well drawn and was a very handy run here first up from interstate. Yarramundi Paul will be running on strongly. Box Up 1.2.5.7

Race 12 - Fantastic Felix was very impressive first up here when winning in 30.39 and last week he flew late to run 2nd coming from well back after missing the kick, he is the one to beat. Sutton Ranger is quick early and well boxed he looks like the pace setter and is a chance of pinching this with luck. Box up 1.2.5.7

KINGS AND QUEENS FEATURE HEATS – NOMINATIONS CLOSE ON MONDAY
Again this year GRSA will conduct the Kings and Queens Feature series with $5,150 Heats on Thursday, 25th August and a $7,500 Final on Thursday, 1st September in continued support of any greyhound affected by the change to the GCA Age Restricted Classics change quite a number of years ago.
The eligibility for this series is for dogs and bitches whelped between 1st March, 2020 and 31st May, 2020.
Performed Maidens are eligible (raced or qualy trialled).
It will be dependent upon nominations, however, we would like to run a dogs Heat and a bitches Heat separately with greyhounds qualifying into the Final. If there are insufficient nominations for either sex then these Heats may be mixed into a couple of mixed Heats. Special conditions apply, however, these races will be non-penalty.
• Nominations close Monday, 22nd August at 9.00 am with GRSA.

As there were no North fields drawn up for round 1 the greyhounds which nominated for the series had preference into the Sunday night at Gawler for the North series. We have drawn together a five-dog field for the 400m North event featuring Lady Luck, Classy Chaos, Svitolina, Shall Not and Compton Casey and four dog 531m North event featuring Toby West, Spring Phoebe, Harry and Scott Hue with the first four placegetters from the 400m event and all runners in the 531m event qualifying for the Final against the South at Murray Bridge. The Gawler and Murray Bridge Clubs along with GRSA appreciate the support for this series from these trainers for both the South and North events.

The North V South Challenge Final over the 530m will be worth $8,000 and a 395m Final will be worth $4,000, to be run at Murray Bridge on August 28 and then from next year will be on rotation with Gawler over the 531m/400m every other year in July. Special conditions regarding eligibility for greyhounds and trainers have been used to establish the fields for each round and accommodate when races have not been conducted. For the Finals over 395m and 530m at Murray Bridge if there are insufficient qualifiers for either region the Finals will be made up of the remainder of the other region-eligible greyhounds to make up an 8-dog field.

TAB MATCH RACE CHALLENGE – SA TAKES ON THE ALL-STARS IN SEPTEMBER
South Australia will again conduct the annual Match Race Challenge in September, to be held on Thursday, 22nd September during the rich Adelaide Cup Carnival. Previously conducted as a State of Origin Series between SA and Victorian greyhounds, this was changed last year to an All-Stars edition due to Covid and the linking of feature races with Victoria being unavailable.
After liaising with GRV and due to a change in the feature race programming and conditions, the linking of the Group 1 Adelaide Cup with Victorian events is not available this year. Also, the Million Dollar Chase which was programmed on top of the Group 1 Adelaide Cup has been changed to an earlier timeslot giving SA’s prestigious event much-needed clear air on the racing calendar.
To ensure that Angle Park TAB Match Race Challenge attracts the best greyhounds possible, GRSA has kept the conditions of the series the same as last year to be “SA TAKES ON THE ALL-STARS”. It will be four (4) SA greyhounds taking on the four (4) best-nominated greyhounds from anywhere in Australia.
GRSA will still guarantee the winner of the TAB Match Race Challenge direct entry into the $100,000 to the winner Group 1 Adelaide Cup Final on Friday, 7th October (bypassing the Adelaide Cup Heats).
Nominations close at 9 am on Monday, 19th September with GRSA.
Conditions of the TAB Match Race Challenge – SA TAKES ON THE ALL-STARS:
Eligibility as to who represents South Australia or All-Stars will be based on the National Championships domiciliary clause. Greyhounds need to be trained in the state they wish to represent for 76 days out of the last 150 days prior to the date that nominations close (19th September).
The best four (4) greyhounds nominated from SA will be selected by the GRSA Grader to represent “SA’s Best”. The best four (4) greyhounds nominated from Interstate will be selected by the GRSA Grader to represent “the All-Stars”.
The Grader will use whatever information he has available to select those greyhounds including liaising with other State bodies as required. The SA Grader’s decision will be final.
Those greyhounds not selected from Interstate will be given the opportunity to solo trial or race in another event on the night. Reserves will be declared, with one (1) from SA and one (1) from Interstate (dependant on nominations), which will replace the SA or All-Stars representative as required. For example, the SA reserve will only replace an SA scratching.
The Grader will rate the four (4) greyhounds from SA and the four (4) from Interstate in order from 1 to 4, with No.1 being the highest rated greyhound from each group. The head-to-head matches will be decided by the two No.1 rated greyhounds competing against each other and then it will be 2 v 2, 3 v 3 and 4 v 4.
Prizemoney for each individual match will also reflect the seeding of greyhounds from 1 to 4, with the No.1 rated greyhound racing for the most prizemoney in the head-to-head races. However, the overall winner of the race will still be determined by actual race times run by each greyhound (to three decimal places).
PRIZEMONEY:
Prizemoney for each pairing: • 1 v 1 – Winner $4,750, Runner Up $500 • 2 v 2 – Winner $4,500, Runner Up $500 • 3 v 3 – Winner $4,250, Runner Up $500 • 4 v 4 – Winner $4,000, Runner Up $500
Prizemoney for the overall placings for TAB Match Race Challenge (based on overall times):
• 1st – $7,500 • 2nd – $2,500 • 3rd – $1,000

MOUNT GAMBIER CHANGES IN PROGRAMMING FROM SEPTEMBER
Please be advised the Mt Gambier GRC in consultation with GRSA advise that there are some slight changes to their programming from September.

On Sunday meetings (Prov 1) the club has been advertising three 305m events, on occasions, these races have taken precedence over other distances. For clarity, the 305m events will be considered after the other distances on the program. The grader will always have the final say based on nominations but the Club's objective is still to accommodate the longer distances where possible. If 305m events are selected for the program then the Maiden will have preference over the Juvenile which will have preference over the Master's event.

On Thursday meetings (Time Graded Prov 2) the club advise that there will be a restriction on Time Rating for the 5 or more wins category over 400m ONLY where greyhounds no faster than 5.50 will be considered. (Any number below 5.50 will not be eligible for that category and distance). The Club will also run one Maiden over the 305m, depending on nominations, under Time Rating conditions at these meetings depending on nominations.
Please refer to the September All Tracks calendar for further information.

GRADING REVIEW OUTCOMES
TIME RATINGS FOR FIRST STARTERS TO CHANGE TO 8 FOR MEETINGS THURSDAY, 25TH AUGUST AND ONWARDS

As previously advised from the Grading Review Panel, it was agreed to change the Time Rating for first starters from 10 to 8. The programming changes have been made in OzChase and will be implemented over the weekend with the first meeting graded using the Time Ratings being Mount Gambier on Thursday, 25th August. Those nominations close at 9am on Monday, 22nd August. This will mean that the base for first starters will now be 8 on the Time Rating band. This is also the base for those greyhounds that have not yet had three lifetime starts. The below table advises the changes -

STARTS TIME RATING CALCULATION
6 or more starts Average of 4 fastest runs of last 6 starts
5 starts Average of 4 fastest runs of all 5 starts
4 starts Average of 3 fastest runs of all 4 starts
3 starts Average of 2 fastest runs of all 3 starts
2 starts Average of 2 fastest runs (including Base Time Rating 8.00)
1 start Average of only start and Base Time Rating (8.00)
Debutant Base Time Rating of 8.00
The Grading Department will monitor the impact of the change on our race fields and how greyhounds are graded into these events. GRSA will accept the Time Ratings as being correct when formatting upcoming fields.
