Racing News

TELLING THE TAIL by The Shadow

We have a terrific night of racing here at headquarters with the running of the National Finals, race 4 is the 2022 Distance Final, it certainly is a quality line up and the eventual winner will certainly make their presence felt in the Final in NSW. Race 6 is the Sprint Final and is a wide-open event with several chances so make sure you have a First Four, as always all races are Trifecta and First Four and with a solid night of racing ahead that’s where we can win some handy money.

Race 1 - It certainly is a toughie to start the night with, Tingling is my top pick here but the draw is the main worry, he can be tardy early but was a last-start winner here and that brings him into the race. Springview Force also was and is the danger. Box Up 1.2.4.6.

Race 2 - This is the Maiden of the night and we will stick with Shot Of Jacks, he finished 2nd here last week and he can hopefully go one better in this. Bad Ringo along with Cynogriffon both are well drawn and look chance. Box up 1.2.4.7.

Race 3 - The old fellow in Classic McLaren is our top selection in this, he has been racing well without winning with five placings in recent runs he loves this draw and loos a big chance. Scorching Sun is well drawn and is a strong type. Add Sandave Diamond and Straight Blaze who will be running on late. Box Up 1.2.4.8.

Race 4 - This is the Final of the National Distance and it is very hard to go past Fantastic Radley who was very impressive when winning here last week in 42.64 by over 8L, he is well drawn and should be right on the pace early. Beck’s Monelli continues to run into the money and is drawn to do the same again. Bedrock Fred is better than his last run and has won here in handy times in the past. Box Up 1.2.4.8.

Race 5 - Cyclone Jane is well drawn here down on the rails, she won here 2 runs back in 30.88 and has the pace to be in the firing line again. Clear View has good Murray Bridge form and should give this a shake. Add Whiskey Soda who is very smart with a clear run early. Box Up 1.2.4.6.

Race 6 - The Final of the National Sprint and this has turned into a strong event, I have gone with Victa Grosso who is out in box 8, he will need a lot of luck early to get across but if he does early will take beating. Came And Went was impressive when winning the last run and is well boxed. Mallee Magic is very strong and has broken the 30 barrier here in the past. Box Up 1.2.3.8.

Race 7 - Fantastic Felix was impressive at his 1st SA run when winning here in 30.39, he can be tardy early but is hard to go past on his last run. Southbound is well boxed down on the fence he won here two runs back from an inside draw and is the danger. Box Up 2.3.5.7.

Race 8 - Got The Swagger has been very impressive here in SA winning 3 of his 4 runs here he looks one of the better bets of the night. Victa Emma is back in distance here and is well drawn she is amongst the chances. Funambulist has been racing well at the Bridge and goes well here. Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 9 - The Chegia kennel could have a big night as they have another good chance here with Fantastic Dixie who is very close to breaking through here and is well drawn. The danger looks to be Hushing Dusk who is a strong type who has been placed here in the past. Box Up 2.4.6.7.

Race 10 - Sky And Thunder is drawn for a forward showing he has been racing well at Gawler and was a winner 3 runs back here in 30.73. Express Speed can show the pace at times, he is the improver and must be respected. Add Sutton Prince who has early speed and is a chance of pinching this with luck. Box Up 1.2.7.8.

Race 11 - Sutton Ranger looks the likely leader from the good draw he won from this draw two starts back when showing a good turn of speed from the lids. Vega Black along with Emerley Bruce for the Trifecta punter. Box Up 1.2.4.5.

Race 12 - On a big night of racing Zipping Chew can send us home on a winning note,  ran 2nd here 1st up and was charging home, he will take a beating here. Lucius Malfoy has been racing well over the short he goes well at this venue and is a danger. Westar Aileen is another who will improve and is a must for the First Four. Box Up 1.2.4.5.

2022 NORTH V SOUTH CHALLENGE KICKS OFF ON SUNDAY NIGHT
On Sunday night the first round of the North v South Challenge kicks off at Murray Bridge. GRSA had 9 eligible greyhounds nominate for the 395m South round and 5 eligible greyhounds nominate for the 530m South round. GRSA supported these events and programmed these races ON Sunday night being races 3 and 4. There was 1 eligible nomination for the North 395m round and 2 eligible nominations for the North 530m round. There were insufficient nominations to run these events, unfortunately.

Under the published conditions, the South events over 395m and 530m on Sunday night will also race next Sunday night at Gawler with the same dogs but different box draw over the 400m and 531m. The final 4 on points after the two rounds for each distance will progress to the finals on Sunday 28th August at Murray Bridge.
Under the published conditions, the greyhounds that were nominated for Sunday night at Murray Bridge to represent the North will have preference into the next round next Sunday night at Gawler on 21st August. Once selected the first 4 from each distance will progress to the finals on Sunday 28th August at Murray Bridge.

• Nominations for Round 2 close with GRSA which will be at 9 am on Wednesday, 17th August

The North V South Challenge will culminate with a 530m Final worth $8,000 at Murray Bridge on Sunday 28th August along with a 395m Final worth $4,000. The series will then be conducted in July each year with Gawler conducting next year's finals.

GAWLER SHOW DATES AND CHANGES
This year the Annual Gawler Show will be held on the weekend of Saturday, 27th and Sunday, 28th of August. Racing on Sunday night, 28th August will be at Murray Bridge. Gawler will race on Tuesday, 23rd August with Murray Bridge Straight track on Wednesday 24th August. Racing on Friday, 26th August will be at Angle Park.
Trials will be cancelled at Gawler on Thursday, 23rd August and Monday, 29th August during this time.
Racing will return to Gawler all going well on Wednesday 31st August however in support of the Gawler Councils' wishes there will be no trials on Thursday 1st September for them to manage final oval maintenance.

TAB MATCH RACE CHALLENGE – SA TAKES ON THE ALL-STARS IN SEPTEMBER
South Australia will again conduct the annual Match Race Challenge in September, to be held on Thursday, 22nd September during the rich Adelaide Cup Carnival. Previously conducted as a State of Origin Series between SA and Victorian greyhounds, this was changed last year to an All-Stars edition due to Covid and the linking of feature races with Victoria being unavailable.
After liaising with GRV and due to a change in the feature race programming and conditions, the linking of the Group 1 Adelaide Cup with Victorian events is not available this year. Also, the Million Dollar Chase which was programmed on top of the Group 1 Adelaide Cup has been changed to an earlier timeslot giving SA’s prestigious event much-needed clear air on the racing calendar.
To ensure that Angle Park TAB Match Race Challenge attracts the best greyhounds possible, GRSA has kept the conditions of the series the same as last year to be “SA TAKES ON THE ALL-STARS”. It will be four (4) SA greyhounds taking on the four (4) best-nominated greyhounds from anywhere in Australia.
GRSA will still guarantee the winner of the TAB Match Race Challenge direct entry into the $100,000 to the winner Group 1 Adelaide Cup Final on Friday, 7th October (bypassing the Adelaide Cup Heats).
Nominations close at 9 am on Monday, 19th September with GRSA.
Conditions of the TAB Match Race Challenge – SA TAKES ON THE ALL-STARS:
Eligibility as to who represents South Australia or All-Stars will be based on the National Championships domiciliary clause. Greyhounds need to be trained in the state they wish to represent for 76 days out of the last 150 days prior to the date that nominations close (19th September).
The best four (4) greyhounds nominated from SA will be selected by the GRSA Grader to represent “SA’s Best”. The best four (4) greyhounds nominated from Interstate will be selected by the GRSA Grader to represent “the All-Stars”.
The Grader will use whatever information he has available to select those greyhounds including liaising with other State bodies as required. The SA Grader’s decision will be final.
Those greyhounds not selected from Interstate will be given the opportunity to solo trial or race in another event on the night. Reserves will be declared, with one (1) from SA and one (1) from Interstate (dependant on nominations), which will replace the SA or All-Stars representative as required. For example, the SA reserve will only replace an SA scratching.
The Grader will rate the four (4) greyhounds from SA and the four (4) from Interstate in order from 1 to 4, with No.1 being the highest rated greyhound from each group. The head-to-head matches will be decided by the two No.1 rated greyhounds competing against each other and then it will be 2 v 2, 3 v 3 and 4 v 4.
Prizemoney for each individual match will also reflect the seeding of greyhounds from 1 to 4, with the No.1 rated greyhound’s racing for the most prizemoney in the head-to-head races. However, the overall winner of the race will still be determined by actual race times run by each greyhound (to three decimal places).
PRIZEMONEY:
Prizemoney for each pairing: • 1 v 1 – Winner $4,750, Runner Up $500 • 2 v 2 – Winner $4,500, Runner Up $500 • 3 v 3 – Winner $4,250, Runner Up $500 • 4 v 4 – Winner $4,000, Runner Up $500
Prizemoney for the overall placings for TAB Match Race Challenge (based on overall times):
• 1st – $7,500 • 2nd – $2,500 • 3rd – $1,000

GRADING REVIEW OUTCOMES
305M MASTERS AT MOUNT GAMBIER
Time band for Mount Gambier 305m Masters-

Previously GRSA had been using a policy for Masters events at Mount Gambier utilising the 277m distance, however, we had not adjusted this for the 305m until there was sufficient racing. At the most recent Grading Review Panel meeting it was decided to make the below changes and implement them.  The below policy will now be implemented for meetings conducted from 1st July 2022-

305m Masters Policy for Mount Gambier – With Mount Gambier GRC conducting one 305m Grade 5 Masters race each meeting where possible, the Grading Department determined conditions for these races using some of the conditions of normal Grade 5 Masters events, however, factoring in the restricted nature of the 305m distance. If a dog wins and runs faster than 17.75, it can still remain eligible for the next week, if the dog then wins and runs faster than 17.75 again it will be ineligible for the race and distance the following week. The dog will either run over another distance or will miss that week’s race. The following week it will then be eligible. If there is no 305m Masters race the greyhound has to miss the next time that race is conducted. This only refers to the greyhounds that win.

TIME BANDS FOR MASTERS AT ANGLE PARK
Since Angle Park has been redeveloped with the new distances of 342m, 530, 595m and 730m GRSA has not allocated any times for Masters events. There subsequently has been sufficient racing at the venue for a time standard to be applied, which was approved at the most recent Grading Review Panel meeting.
The below time ratings for Masters events will now be implemented for meetings conducted from 1st July, 2022.
Time Bands are –
342m –19.75
530m –30.80
595m – Unlikely
730m – Unlikely

These Time Standards only refer to Grade 5 Masters only and NOT Mixed Masters events. When the winner of a Grade 5 Masters (Non-Penalty) runs faster than the time standard then they will have two unplaced runs at that venue over that distance in a normal graded event before being eligible for a Grade 5 master at that venue.
