TELLING THE TAIL

by The Shadow

This is the biggest night of racing here in South Australia for all Greyhound enthusiasts, the 2017 UBET Adelaide Cup Final, some smart judges would say it’s one of the best fields in a long time assembled to try and win the massive $75,000 to the winner prize. I can’t believe how open it is as there looks to be several chances to claim this prestigious event.

Race 1 on a huge night of racing we have to kick off with an early winner and we will go with the Tony Rasmussen trained Striker Klinsman down in box 1, he has been well travelled of late chasing the big races Interstate and from his rails draw can kick up early and take a power of beating. Jay’s Ace has a good turn of early pace and will be right in the mix along with the pacey Alpha Alexander. Box Up 1.3.5.8.

Race 2 - Jeff Guy is no stranger to training a winner here at headquarters and he has a big chance with Paraphernalia out in box 6, he has a good strike rate and has been placed here in the past in good time. Mr. Arjay and Winsome Summer both are in good form and will be rattling home late and can figure in the money. Box Up 3.5.6.8.

Race 3 - This is the 2017 Premier’s Cup over the 731m and Bogie Bekim is the class runner in the field, he fell last start at Gawler but had handy form prior, he hasn’t been at his absolute best but has a terrific strike rate over this trip and track and should start the punters elect. Brick Lane has been making every post a winner of late with 3 wins on the trot over the 643m at Gawler and looks primed to lead here for a long way. Add in Zero Knockin’ who was a slick winner here last start over the 600m for the minors. Box Up 1.3.4.7.

Race 4 - I like the book ends in this, with the pacey veteran of Gun McBain and Allen Oregon, both are very smart when on song and are in terrific form at the moment, it’s very hard to split them tonight and they look the main chances. Colden Star has terrific short course form in Victoria and could be a smokey at Each Way Odds. Box Up 1.3.6.8.

Race 5 - This is the Cup Consolation and I’m leaning towards High Eden Snow out in box 8, he made good late ground when finishing 2nd behind Worm Burner in a slick 29.59 and on that run he will be very hard to beat out of his favourite box. Hukanui will be rattling home but gets a long way back in his races however is a must for trifecta punters. Box Up 2.6.7.8.

Race 6 - Brett Bravo is an astute trainer and travels far and wide to claim the bickies, he has a handy one here with Zulu Knocks who won 2 starts ago at the Meadows from box 7, he flew home late to finish 3rd here behind Aston Dee Bee at her last start in an Adelaide Cup heat and looks primed to win here over the 600m. Aston Amon loves this trip and is boxed for a bold showing as is Windmill Haze who has won here in quick time in the past. Box Up 1.6.7.8.

Race 7 - Molly Dobbs found early trouble here last start but is a chance of leading these and if able to, will be very hard to beat from her draw of 4. Diego Bale was a huge run when 3rd behind the flying Bewildering in 29.52 and looks a major player. Jimmy McBain is racing well and continues to run cheeky races at big odds. Box Up 4.5.6.7.

Race 8 - The UBET Adelaide Cup Final and how good is this event? The Seona Thompson kennel has a very strong hand with 3 runners and I think the kennel can nearly run the trifecta with their 3 charges. When looking at the terrific field I am sticking with the locally owned Worm Burner who returned here last week and as we all know, he loves his home track and proved far to strong when winning in 29.59, he is our local champ and has beaten the best here in the past and there is no reason he won’t do it again tonight. Aston Dee Bee has won his last 4 and is owned locally by Ray Borda and is boxed for a bold showing. The third of the Thompson runners is Bewildering out in box 8 and should start the punters elect, he is all class and was the best of the night winner in the heats here last week in a slick 29.52 from this draw. In summing up the event all 8 runners are here to claim the $75,000 first prize in one of the best Cup fields here in a long time and if you are looking for value go with Raw Ability from box 4 as he should be around the 12/1 mark and is a huge chance if the field opens up early. Box Up all the evens 2.4.6.8.

Race 9 - Tony Rasmussen looks to have a handy one in Barton Bale, he made his Angle Park debut here last week when running 3rd behind Worm Burner in an Adelaide Cup heat and he looks one of the better bets on the programme from his rails draw. Add in Demon Premier and Rock Away at big value for the trifecta. Box Up 1.4.5.8.

Race 10 - The pacey Bell Of Eden for the Ben Rawlings kennel has won his last 4 starts at Gawler over the short and is making her Angle Park debut, she is sure to be well tried here and should prove very hard to beat if she steps. Serene Machine was a last start winner here in 30.15 from box 5 and will be right in this. Box Up 1.4.6.7.

Race 11 - Gregory Board has made every post a winner since transferring to SA and he can win here with Spring And All, she has won 2 from 5 at this venue and found a heap of trouble here last start so we will put her on top. Shores Girl is a lot better than her past couple suggest and appears the likely improver along with Sally’s Girl out in box 8. Box Up 4.5.7.8.

Race 12 - Its always good to go home on a winner and I like Glory Fire who we tipped last start when she found a heap of trouble, she can bounce back from her draw of 3 with her early pace and lead throughout. Minotaur can be tardy early but does his best work over the last 100m. Box Up the inside 4. 1.2.3.4.

2017 UBET ADELAIDE CUP FINAL PREVIEW

In front of a strong school holiday crowd and in fine but cold conditions last week’s heat winners were some of the best chasers in the land making tonight’s Group 1 UBET Adelaide Cup final one of the best we’ve seen in recent years.

The first heat was a two dog battle between Victorian pair Aston Dee Bee and Raw Ability. Raw Ability showed blistering speed to lead early in a flying 4.33 first split with Aston Dee Bee in hot pursuit. Down the back straight Aston Dee Bee obtained an inside run and the pair were neck and neck as they matched motors. It looked like Aston Dee Bee was gaining the ascendancy however Raw Ability would not go away and the pair duelled into the final straight. As they reached the winning post Aston Dee Bee did a little bit the better on the line to win by ¾ lengths in a blistering 29.60 with Raw Ability brave in defeat with both qualifying for tonight’s final. They have both drawn close to the rails tonight and have to be considered great chances in the Group 1 feature.

The second heat was won by Victorian Bewildering who ran a sizzling 29.52 for the 515m journey after coming from box 8. He began well and ranged up alongside early leader High Eden Frost, down the back straight Bewildering started to open up his shoulders and raced past the local going onto win by over 4 lengths. High Eden Frost battled on extremely well to grab second and also qualify for tonight. If Bewildering can produce the same from box 8 again tonight he is surely the one to beat while High Eden Frost has the prefect box and could be the blow out chance in the race.

Heat 3 saw boom Victorian Zara’s Entity go hard left and find trouble early however she recovered and found herself in second spot and began to motor home. Off the back straight Zara’s Entity had moved to the lead with the lure driver doing his best to keep in front of the star chaser. As they reached the line Zara’s Entity claimed a solid victory in a slick 29.83. The overall time was strong however the run home of Zara’s Entity was brilliant in a slick 12.49 and makes her a big show in tonight’s final if she can get a clear run early from box 7.

The fourth heat saw Victorian Striker Light make full use of her early speed spearing through from box 1 to lead. Down the back straight Striker Light was off and gone opening up a big space between herself and her rivals. She got to the second split faster than any greyhound in the series in a sizzling 16.68. Off the back straight there were no challengers to Striker Light and she went on to win easily even though she got a bit tired over the concluding stages to run a solid 29.92 for the 515m journey. She has drawn box 3 and looks the early leader and with any trouble in behind she could grip on over the concluding stages.

Heat 5 saw local superstar Worm Burner return home to a track where he dominated for the past 2 years winning an incredible 37 races. Worm Burner began well and sat in early for a trail before moving to second down the back straight. Worm Burner put his foot down of the back straight with the star chaser opening up a break on his rivals as he charged to the finishing line. Worm Burner won by almost 5 lengths in a brilliant 29.59 with the biggest cheer of the night reserved for him as he crossed the line. He has drawn 6 tonight and we all know he loves an outside draw so he has to be one of the favourites.

The final heat saw Cairnlea Kenny win again even after a slow beginning and minor trouble early which didn’t stop him from swooping home to claim victory. He ran a flying 29.77 and after he drew box 5 for tonight he would be considered an outside chance however many judges believe he can get a nice run to the rails and with some minor trouble can definitely run into the money.
The Group 1 UBET Adelaide Cup Final carries total prizemoney of $107,500, with the winner to receive $75,000.

The Final field in Box Draw order is:
1.  High Eden Frost  Jan Jones (SA)  $18.00   |  $4.00
2.  Aston Dee Bee  Seona Thompson (VIC)  $3.25  |  $1.40
3.  Striker Light  Brett Bravo (VIC)  $17.00  |   $3.80
4.  Raw Ability  Anthony Azzopardi (VIC)  $9.00  |  $2.40
5.  Cairnlea Kenny  Petar Jovanovic (SA)  $16.00  |  $3.65
6.  Worm Burner  Seona Thompson (VIC)  $6.50  |  $1.96
7.  Zara’s Entity  Kel Greenough (VIC)  $8.00  |  $2.25
8.  Bewildering  Seona Thompson (VIC)  $2.85  |  $1.33

9.  High Eden Snow (1st Res)  Jan Jones (SA) SCR
10. Zipping Inglis (2nd Res)  Matthew Lanigan (VIC) SCR

GRSA appreciates the continuing support of GRVIC for allowing our premier night to be conducted on a Friday each year in the interests of the National Racing calendar. By GRVIC swapping one of their meetings the Group 1 UBET Adelaide Cup will gain maximum coverage to the wider community with all races being shown on Sky Racing 1 and makes for a terrific start to the weekend.

NOTIFICATION OF TRAINING AMENDMENT & CLEARANCE OF GREYHOUNDS

Trainers are reminded of their obligation to notify GRSA within 3 working days of a greyhound coming into or leaving their kennel (Rule 105(4)(i)).

This is a requirement for all greyhounds regardless of where bred.  We have had a number of trainers recently put in training amendments late the night prior to nominations closing at 9am the following day, this practice can lead to your nomination not being accepted or being unable to nominate online should any issues arise the following morning.

Trainers are also leaving it to the night before nominations close to have greyhounds “checked off”.  This practice can also lead to your nomination not being accepted or being unable to nominate online should any issues arise.

It is therefore in the trainer’s best interest to have lodged with GRSA the training amendment and clearance of the greyhound a number of days prior to wishing to nominate the greyhound.  It is not GRSA’s responsibility to ensure that the paperwork is processed within ½ hour, which is the amount of time available to have it processed before nominations close at 9am.

COMPLETION OF PAPERWORK

Participants are reminded of their obligation to ensure that when lodging paperwork that it is fully completed and payment is made at the time of lodgement.

GRSA is here to assist should you be unsure of how to complete any paperwork however it is not our responsibility to arrange for its completion, nor is it our responsibility to ensure that it is lodged.  Therefore, please ensure when lodging any paperwork eg, Transfer of Ownerships, Litter Registrations etc that they are fully completed and paid for and lodged within a timely manner.

TOP GUN SPRINTERS AND STAYERS INVITATIONS RELEASED WITH BOGIE BEKIM REPRESENTING SA

Forty-three of the country’s best greyhounds were handed invitations last week for either the Group 1 Sky Racing Topgun or the Group 2 Sky Racing Stayers Topgun, with both races to be run at The Meadows on October 28.

South Australia is represented in the Stayers with the Ben Rawlings trained Bogie Bekim given an invitation. It is a reward for a terrific year so far for the high quality stayer. Hopefully he can make the final cut.

The final field will be announced on Sky Racing 2’s, The Catching Pen on Tuesday, October 17, at 6.30pm. The Group 1 Sky Racing Topgun will be worth $150,000 to the winner (the richest invitation-only race in the world), while the Group 2 Sky Racing Stayers Topgun holds a $75,000 winner’s purse. The box draw for both races, once the finalists for both races are announced, will take place on track at The Meadows on October 21.

MT GAMBIER 277M RACING

Recently GRSA has had a couple of queries in regard to the reintroduction of 277m racing at Mt Gambier after they installed their 732m distance boxes.

When Mt Gambier transitioned from Non TAB to TAB Sky Racing the 400m boxes were installed and the 277m racing ceased. There is no intention from GRSA to move back to 277m racing. With the full support of the Mt Gambier GRC in regard to Time Grading, greyhounds of all abilities can race on Fridays over 400m, 512m, 600m so we feel at this time there is no need to separate the pool of greyhounds any further. Time Grading does allow greyhounds the opportunity to get into a race they can be competitive in, even if they can’t run a quick 400m.
Having said that, like the potential to run 388m races on a Monday night, where we are today is quite different than two years ago and will likely be different in a further two years, therefore  nothing would be ruled out as an option by GRSA.

CHASERS BUFFET ON MONDAY NIGHTS

GRSA will be trialling a change in food offerings at Chasers with a reduced buffet to be available on Monday nights as well as a breakfast/brunch buffet on Wednesday. This began on  Monday 9th October. The snack menu will also be available. The ala carte menu will still be available with existing participant discounts in McQueens.

BREEDERS SUPPORT UPDATES

In September last year in response to inquiries about the changes to the Breeders Support Program taking effect in April 2016 Greyhound Racing SA advised the changes below.

These changes are in support of breeder viability and continues increased spending on animal welfare and integrity initiatives.
Changes listed below:

Breeder Support Program
The following changes to the Breeder Support Program have been implemented:

SA Bred Maiden Payment - $1,000 if whelped in 2016

GRSA has committed to dramatically increase this payment from $175 to $1,000 ($500 breeder/$500 owner) on 1st July, 2017. This will result in all greyhounds that are whelped in 2016 being eligible for this support.
