There are the occasional long priced runner that gets up at Gawler greyhounds, but on Tuesday, a runner at bigger odds than usual saluted the judge.

Race 2 was the Pets Tucker Open maiden over the 400m journey, with Madly Deeply from box 3 getting to the front from Classic Impact (6) on the outside and Bruce Da Britt (2) on the rail. A bit of buffeting occurred down the back straight between Classic Impact and Madly Deeply, which then saw Bruce Da Britt shoot to the lead, with Jack And Lolli (1) getting a rails run and getting into second spot.

Bruce Da Britt and Jack And Lolli fought it out to the line, with Bruce Da Britt putting in that bit extra to win by just under a length in the time of 23.22 secs. Jack And Lolli had to be content with second place two weeks in a row for trainer Todd Kelly of Middle Beach, with Delinquancy (8) running third for Karen Bearpark of Two Wells.

Bruce Da Britt was overlooked in betting and started at the long odds of $51.60 on the SA TAB, for trainer Rebecca McAuley-Fry of Lewiston. Bruce is owned in Victoria by the Hebee Geebee Syndicate, managed by Graham Britt, and this is the first greyhound he has placed with Rebecca.

Rebecca described Bruce as a beautiful greyhound and was pleased to get the win. Bruce had just returned to racing after having an injury, and this may have accounted for his performance. Bruce has now had 7 starts over the 400m distance, and has a win and 2 placings against his name from those races.

Rebecca has 11 in work at the moment and says it can be very hectic, trying to balance a young family and greyhound racing. While racing can have it’s moments with highs and lows, she loves everything about the sport. She has a few greyhounds retiring soon, so she is looking for some replacements.

Two trainers scored doubles on the day. Troy Murray landed Sometimes Speedy and Smokey Assassin, while Paula Hearnden landed one of her first doubles with Long Gully Bill and Long Gully Tese.

Racing continues every Tuesday afternoon, with the next Friday afternoon meeting being on the 26th and a Sunday twilight on 4th August.
