Last Tuesday we had a two start runner with the perfect winning score and another one bobbed this week at Gawler greyhounds. In the Rapidvite Open Maiden over 400m, Taser McBain  took full advantage of box 1 to shoot straight to the front, but Alhanna (8) got wound up out wide and crossed to the front, with Punishment (3) slotting into third position.Punishment mad a strong run along the rails before switching around the leader, to get on terms with Alhanna. Alhanna looked to have enough petrol in the tank to win, but in the final few strides Punishment went up a gear to get the verdict by a ½ length. Alhanna ran an impressive race to finish second for Angela Modra of Gawler River, with Taser McBain running third for Todd Kelly of Two Wells.
Punishment is trained by Carole Scott of Glandore and is raced in partnership with Darryl Mader. The young brindle dog is aptly named as it is bred from Madam Lash, a bitched raced with considerable success by Carole. “Gus” as he is known was whelped at home and then sent to Sydney for rearing, as a suburban backyard is not suitable. During his education period, Gus showed a lot of potential, although he is not currently jumping as well at the start as he did then. Describing Gus as having a beautiful temperament, Carole is looking to place Gus in the upcoming classic races for younger greyhounds.
Carole has been 10 years in the training game and finds it to be a great stress relief from her work as a nurse. “It is enjoyable and we treat the greyhounds like family, making sure we all have fun”, Carole said after the race.
Natasha Isaacson continued her recent good results when Backstreet Babe won her maiden race. A newcomer to the Gawler track, former Tasmanian John Shanahan had three runners engaged in the final race, with Wheels of Fire winning and Just As Fancy finishing second.
Racing is at Gawler every Tuesday afternoon with a Friday afternoon meeting on 2nd May.
