A neck was just enough (Gawler)
A neck margin was just enough for a greyhound to break through for it’s first win at Gawler greyhounds last Tuesday.
In race 1, the Rapidvite Open Maiden Series over 531m, Burra Arms bounced straight to the front from box 4, aided by having 2 vacant boxes on it’s inside due to scratchings. Crisp Bale (8) crossed over well into second position with Midway Magic (7) not far away.
Burra Arms got out to a 3 length break, with Noren Bale (5) railing to get into second position. Noren Bale was slowly catching the leader and as they turned for home, Noren Bale positioned itself for an outside run around Burra Arms. In a one on one battle down the straight, Burra Arms was able to hold on and score by the narrow margin of a neck, in the time of 31.22 secs.
Noren Bale ran a determined race to finish second for Lisa Rasmussen of Murray Bridge, while Midway Magic which had been travelling at the rear of the field, some 10 lengths off the lead, ran on well around the field to get third placing for Des Hockley of Lewiston.
Burra Arms is trained at Paskeville by David Hall for Anthony Ebeyer from Melbourne. Anthony bred the blue and white dog and has had a purple patch with not only this win, but two others in Melbourne in the last 3 days. David and Gina have had a working relationship with Anthony for over 30 years and have trained many of his greyhounds over that time, currently having 3 of his in work.
David and Gina are stalwarts of the industry and have been involved for over 50 years. “The reason that we have been involved so long is that it is a good hobby that keeps you going” added Gina. Burra Arms has had 19 previous race starts to break his maiden status, so to win by any margin was a great result. Once you break through for that win, further success often quickly follows, so let’s hope that is the case this time.
No individual trainer was able to get multiple winners for the day, but the Murray family pitched in for a treble between them. Ray Murray led in Aston Kane and sons Troy and Jarrad won with Kalden Trojan and Proven Juddy respectively.
With the annual Gawler Show coming up, racing will be transferred to other venues, but there will be racing on Sunday 17th and 24th (twilight) and Tuesday 19th (afternoon).
