2021 SA Stud Dog of the Year

Worm Burner - 420

Worm Burner was awarded the leading SA Sire for 2021 making it a three peat of awards after he won in 2019 and 2020. In 2021 progeny of Worm Burner won an amazing 420 races, a massive 387 wins in front of his nearest rival in an astonishing year. On some occasions he sired atleast half the card of racing on any given night locally. Some of his best performed greyhounds for the year included SA Derby winner Mallee Magic (10 wins) and SA Derby placegetter Gemtree Maximus (16 wins) along with Gawler 50th Anniversary Cup winner See You Smile (10 wins).

 

2021 SA Brood Bitch of the Year

Victa Victoria - 108

Victa Victoria was awarded the Brood Bitch of the Year, with 108 winners in 2021. Her winners were out of two litters. The Cosmic Rumble litter produced a number of winners with the standout being Victa Jess (11 wins).

However it was the Fernando Bale litter that has been the standout producing 12 pups and all of them making their way to the race track. All but Victa Oreo and Victa Florence (who won last month) have won their Maiden however Oreo’s win is not far away.

Standouts of the litter include Victa Haydn (15 wins) and Victa Grosso (14 wins) who are finalists for the SA Greyhound of the Year after winning multiple feature races during the season with Victa Reid (16 wins), Victa Kurt (11 wins), Victa Buzz (9 wins), Victa Mikey (8 wins), Victa Saige (8 wins), Victa Maggie (7 wins), Victa Emma (4 wins) and Victa Daryl (3 wins) rounding out the litter mates.

 

2021 SA Breeder of the Year

Joan Schadow – 260 points

This is the twelfth time this award has been presented and was introduced to recognize the outstanding Breeder in the State. This award is decided on a point’s basis for SA Bred greyhounds that have won races at Sky Racing meetings during 2021 in SA.

Joan’s winners were mainly out of two litters. The Cosmic Rumble producing Victa Jess (11 wins) and the Fernando Bale litter that produced standouts Victa Haydn and Victa Grosso who are finalists for the SA Greyhound of the Year after winning multiple feature races during the season along with the other “VICTA” dogs. The 12 pups from this litter have won a total of 95 races between them.

 

2021 SA Owner/Trainer of the Year (Tier 3)

Tim Richards - 81

Tim Richards was the leading Owner/Trainer of the Year with a total of 81 TAB winners in 2021. Tim’s licence classification only allows him to train those greyhounds that he is in the ownership of, and he had a great year. Tim had good success with his greyhounds, including He’s All Purpose (8 wins) which won the SA Country Cup and represented SA in the National Straight Track Championships in Qld, Two Hands George (12 wins) and first split record holder at Angel Park, He’s On Fire (8 wins) .

 

2021 TAB Leading Trainer of the Year

Tony Rasmussen – 217

Tony Rasmussen made it a six peat of training awards as he was awarded the TAB leading Trainer of the Year for the sixth year in a row, with a total of 217 winners at TAB meetings in SA during 2021 increasing from his 205 from last year. Tony received great support again from his wife Lisa and children making it a real family business.

Many of his winners came from the litter of Fernando Bale and Victa Victoria with the “Victa” dogs winning many races however with introducing a lot of new owners into his kennel and travelling 100’s of km from Gawler to Mt Gambier in placing his dogs even more winners followed.

Lisa came fourth in this year’s leading trainer award with 151 wins up from her 150 from last year.

2021 SA Syndicate of the Year

“My Four Girls” Syndicate

Manager – Kerry Braun

This is the fifteenth time that this award has been presented to acknowledge an important part of our industry in Syndication. The “My Four Girls” Syndicate was formed in SA on 24th January 2020 with members including Kerry Braun, Sue Schadow, Carol Hondow, Ron Schadow and Robyn Basham. In 2021 The Syndicate won 97 races with their greyhounds winning at Gawler, Angle Park and Murray Bridge. The main performers were Victa Reid (16 wins), Victa Haydn (15 wins), Victa Grosso (14 wins), and Victa Kurt (11 wins).

A special mention to other SA registered syndicates who had terrific success in 2021 which included Board Racing (69 winners), Bazinga (60), Razza Racing (37) and Bungaloo (29).

 

2021 SA City Strike Rate

Tim Aloisi – 73.08%

This award is based on performances for Angle Park city meetings (City A/City B). The trainer must also have a minimum of 20 starters for the year. Tim Aloisi qualified through the performances of Stout Monelli, Lashes Monelli, Memphis Keeping, Zipping Sullivan and Run Like Jess. During 2021 Tim trained 19 winners (6 placings) from 26 starters at city meetings, giving him a winning 73.08% strike rate.

 

2021 Gawler Trackstar Award

Crazy Diva – 46 starts (14/9/7)

Trainer – Des Hockley

Crazy Diva raced 34 times over the Gawler 400m journey with 12 wins and 11 placings with her best time being 22.55. She ran 4th in the final of the Gawler Sprint Classic after finishing second in her heat. She was also second in the Gawler Breeders final over 400m after winning her heat. She raced 12 times over the 531m journey winning 2 races and placed on 5 occasions. She won the Gawler Future Stars final and was second in the Breeders Prelude (2) final with her best time being 30.90. She raced all year winning 30% of her races and running in the top three 65% of the time.

 

2021 Run Of The Year – Victa Grosso (October)

The Run of the Year was Victa Grosso for trainer Tony Rasmussen with his win in the final of the Group 3 Gawler Gold Cup over the 531m on Sunday 24th October. Beginning from box four he began well in the feature final however found himself back midfield as they raced into the back straight. Victa Grosso moved to the outside and began to make quick ground as the runners turned for home. He put the accelerator jets on and raced into first place and a breathtaking victory along the inside. He won in powerful style recording a slick 30.90 in winning by 1 ½ lengths.

Victa Grosso wins this award based on the combination of the public votes where he was voted second (with 32% behind Danyo’s Wylie with 42%) and votes from the GOTY Panel where he was voted first ahead of Fantastic Radley.
