With Victorian star Aston Rupee for trainer Glen Rounds waiting in the wings after already qualifying for the Group 1 Adelaide Cup final after a devastating win in last weeks Match Race Challenge his seven other competitors were determined via six outstanding heats conducted last night at headquarters. In front of a strong school holiday crowd and in coolish conditions all eyes and ears tuned into Angle Park to see who else would qualify for next Friday nights $145,250 feature.

It was a night to remember for the local sprinting stars as they claimed four of the six heats on offer, out gunning their more fancied Interstate counterparts in exciting and competitive racing and giving strong hope of another home town victory like last year where Golden Night won for Troy Murray and SA.

The first heat saw rising local star Came And Went for trainer Troy Murray led throughout and hang on for a solid victory defeating Stout Monelli by a nose in 30.33. After finishing second in the Group 3 SA Derby two weeks ago he now finds himself in a Group 1 final at only 22 months of age.

It was back to back wins for the locals and Troy Murray when Major Major turned back the clock and scored a brilliant win over Weblec Jet by ¾ lengths in a handy 30.48. After sitting second for most of the race he exploded to the lead turning for home and would not be caught. This will be Major Major’s second Cup final after running 4th in 2020.

It was a three peat for SA when Spring Lilac for Vadim Roz created the biggest upset of the night winning at $26.00 and securing her spot in next weeks final. She showed great speed to lead most of the way and with her strength held of all the challengers to claim ¾ lengths win from Keep It Black. Spring Lilac recorded the fastest time of the night running a sizzling 30.22 with Keep It Black for Angela Langton who charged home also qualifying as the fastest second of the night.

The fourth heat saw Weblec Blazer for Victorian trainer Angela Langton win in devastating fashion in a last to first victory. Continuing his terrific form from last weeks Match Race Challenge he bombed the start and was last out the front straight on the first occasion however he railed hard down the back and sizzled home in a blistering run home of 12.47 to gun down Mr Fix It in 30.25.

In the fifth heat short priced favourite Do It for Victorian trainer Jeff Britton made full use of his inside draw to just sit off pace early before railing hard in the later stages to claim a brilliant win over Shavano. He won by over 5 lengths in a solid 30.36 showing his class and booking his spot next Friday’s night.

The final heat saw master local trainer Cameron Butcher produce Jack’s Well third up from a break to claim a stirring win. Considered the best sprinter in SA for the early part of the season an injury lay off had seen some local stars challenge him for supremacy however he has returned in fine fettle and rated a strong 30.42 in winning by over a length from Tyler Durden after sitting on pace early and then racing away.

The Group 1 TAB Adelaide Cup Final will be run next Friday 8th October and carries total prizemoney of $145,250, with the winner to receive $100,000. It will be race 8 on the program and is listed to jump at 8.58pm (SA time).
