Last night’s Champion Puppy Final at Angle Park drew together some of the best young chasers in the state all vying for the prestigious title however it was the Cameron Butcher trained Coorong Nugget who claimed the $6,000 first prize and another big race to the kennel.

Coorong Nugget was heavily supported in the market to start second favourite behind the Troy Murray trained Major Major who had dominated the market since his flying heat win last week.

As the start was affected Coorong Nugget began well from box 6 and raced up towards the front. Major Major also began well from box 5 but wanted to get down towards the inside while the inside brigade wanted to move out halting his momentum. Marlee Jaye who showed brilliant early speed last week for Liz Harley also showed blistering speed to lead from box 1 as the field reached the winning post on the first occasion. As they left the front straight Marlee Jaye led easily with Coorong Nugget moving into a clear second while the majority of other runners were caught up in some interference on the first turn affecting their chances. As the field settled it looked a two dog race as they entered the back straight with Marlee Jaye in the lead hotly pursued by Coorong Nugget and a big margin to Oakvle Blue who swepped into third for Nathan Wilson. Express Eve for Kirin Corby, Oakvale Style for Nathan Wilson and Major Major were able to balance up and began to make steady progress from midfield but a long way of the leading division. Off the back straight and Marlee Jaye was coursing wide in the lead and presented a beautiful inside run for Coorong Nugget who charged to the front and raced away looking all over a winner. Into the front straight and Coorong Nugget was in no danger going on to record a strong 29.71 win by 6 lengths. Marlee Jaye went via the cape turning form home allowing Oakvale Blue to charge into second and the luckless Major Major flying home for third while she clocked in fourth.

Coorong Nugget is nicely bred by Blazin’ Bomber out of Spicy Peppa being bred by Matthew Payne and owned by Cameron and Yvonne Butcher. Coorong Nugget has now won 3 races from his 7 career starts with 3 minor placings and prizemoney of $13,380.
