2016 Shane McQueen Feature Final
Ken Gill won the Shane McQueen Feature for the third time when American Tony defeated a hot line up to take the winner’s cheque of $6,000.
The son of Gable La Fourche and Kidder was sent out at double figure odds with the market dominated by Gun McBain for Todd Kelly and Eduardo for Kirin Corby. As the boxes flew open Gun McBain speared straight to the front with both Eduardo and American Tony in hot pursuit. As the field raced down the front straight on the first occasion Eduardo seemed to lose ground quickly dropping out to near last with him not being able to lengthen his stride. Gun McBain led them out of the front straight but American Tony was nice and handy and ready to pounce while Barely’s Rhythm for Colin Rana was making steady ground. As they left the back straight American Tony was gaining the ascendancy from Gun McBain and ran to the front, looking the winner. Barley’s Rhythm levelled up with Gun McBain as they entered the front straight and then came out after American Tony however he had secured a race winning break going down to the line in a solid 35.06 for the 600m journey. American Tony won by almost a length from Barely’s Rhythm with Gun McBain a further 2 lengths back in third. Eduardo was vetted after the event and was found to have sustained an injury during the run, being stood down for 10 days.
American Tony has now won 15 races with 13 placings from 50 starts with career prizemoney of almost $28,000. Over the 600m his record stands at 6 wins from his 12 starts.
On the presentation dais Ken Gill was wrapped to win the Shane McQueen for a third time with the race named in honour of Shane who was an excellent greyhound administrator starting his career in WA before becoming the CEO of GRSA until his untimely passing in 2003.
