Last night at Angle Park the final of the SA Stayers Cup was run in front of a big oncourse crowd and they were delighted to see Danyo’s Tom for trainer Lauren Harris breakthrough for a well deserved win.

After making the step up to the staying ranks the Cosmic Rumble x Danyo’s Kelly chaser had been a model of consistency over the Angle Park 731m journey. Prior to last night he had had 12 starts for 8 seconds, 1 third and 3 fourths however it was lucky start number 13 tonight for his maiden staying trip win and what a way to do it, in the Cup final.

Danyo’s Tom showed his customary brilliant early speed to lead the field into the front straight on the first occasion with Gelignite Jack, Zipping Geoff and Here Comes Henry all in hot pursuit. Into the back straight Danyo’s Tom slipped away from his rivals and opened up a nice break while Zipping Geoff ran to second and Night Rhythm began to make solid ground from the rear.

As heads turned for home Danyo’s Tom was in no danger, going on to win in a handy 43.73 by 2 ¼ lengths from Night Rhythm who flashed home into second just infront of Zipping Geoff.

Danyo’s Tom has now won 11 races from his 60 lifetime starts including 26 minor placings and prizemoney of close to $35,000.

The other highlight tonight on a terrific card of racing was the performance of Gun McBain for trainer Todd Kelly who won the Free For All event in fine style and in doing so he equalled Never Short’s long standing record of 37 wins on the Angle Park loam set back in the late eighties.

One more win for the son of Spring Gun and Flame McBain at Angle Park and he will stand alone with the most wins recorded at SA’s premier racing venue.
