2016 COFFEX COFFEE OAKS – BOX DRAW

Last night at Angle Park we saw three terrific heats of the Coffex Coffee Oaks where the first two placegetters and two fastest thirds from each heat qualified for next week’s Group 3 final.

The first heat of the night saw Wynburn Toozie for Kel Greenough and Times Square for Chris Halse sent out equal favourites but it was the Brett Bravo trained Andrea Doria who spoiled the party with a solid victory. Wynburn Toozie showed brilliant speed to lead from the inside box running her first split in a sizzling 4.38 while Times Square found major trouble on the first turn putting pay to her winning chances. Andrea Doria who looked to be out of form on paper bounced back to her very best to run down Wynburn Toozie in the shadows of the post and claim a solid victory by 1 ¼ lengths in a solid 30.00. Times Square lost many lengths early and flashed home for third only 2 lengths from the winner and was clearly very unlucky not to qualify for the final however was declared the first reserve and would be a big chance if is she gained a start.

Local hopes for Oaks success sat firmly on the shoulders of the Robyn Mackellar trained speedster Fabregal who stepped out as the clear favourite in the second heat last night and she didn’t disappoint. She ran to the lead early and saw of the strong challenge from the Brett Bravo trained Shelley Keeping to go on and win by ¾ length in a slick 29.71 to be the fastest qualifier. Belk Air Mist ran home nicely into third place. Fabregal who competed in last weeks National Sprint Final again hasn’t been helped with box draws in feature races drawing box 6 next Thursday night however she is the only SA representative in the series so she will garnish plenty of local support.

The final heat of the night was won by the Victorian kennels of Jeff Guy when Brazen Bomber upset a strong line up to run home powerfully to score by a head from the Jeff Britton trained Pepper Fire in a flying 29.85. Race favourites battled out the minors with Fanta Bale for Rob Britton edging out Cavalcade for Glenn Rounds in the run to the line and grab the final spot in next weeks final.

After the box draw last night it looks an interesting race with plenty of speed out wide so the run to the first turn will be vital.

Paraphernalia for Jeff Guy trialled impressively over the 515m running 29.66 with splits of 4.48 and 16.93 while Sassy Ginger looked good for her first performance in the care of Kel Greenough since coming from WA running 29.74 with splits of 4.46 and 16.85.

Monaro Monelli for WA trainer David Hobby went very well considering he just stepped of a plane running 29.74 with splits of 4.44 and 16.91 however the eye catching performance came from the Kel Greenough trained Weekend Binge who ran a sizzling 29.43 with brilliant splits of 4.35 and 16.54. Its shaping as a super series.
