Racing News

On a clear night last night at Angle Park we saw four outstanding heats of the Schweppes Derby where the racing was of the highest level. The fastest qualifier for the final was the Peter Young trained Queenslander Iva Vision who was able to gun down Dyna Alchemist in the shadows of the post for a brilliant win. After a slow beginning he railed strongly before moving to the outside turning for home and grabbing the first heat by a neck in a sizzling 29.68 for the 515m journey. He will be joined in the final by the Steve Collins trained Dyna Alchemist who also did a terrific job leading most of the way and running a personal time of 29.70. Iva Vision looks to be drawn nicely in the final out in box 8 and looks one of the favourites in an outstanding line up while Dyna Alchemist will have to be at his best to offset box 4.

The second heat was taken out in fine style by the Angela Langton trained Wind Whistler who powered away from his rivals over the concluding stages to win by over 2 lengths in a slick 29.82. After a slow beginning he weaved his way through the pack before claiming leader Allen Icarus off the back straight and racing away for a strong win. Allen Icarus held on well to run second giving Steve Collins two runners in next weeks final. Series favourite Hostile found plenty of trouble in the run to finish fifth and miss the final however put a line through the performance as he had no luck.

The third heat continued the golden run of the Langton/Jeff Britton combination when Texas Titan scored a powerful win. Bred and owned in SA by Nathan Wilson he put his opposition away of the back straight to win by over 5 lengths in a flying 29.77. While favourites Gorham Bale and Dyna Ostrander jockeyed  for position Texas Titan was able to race around the outside and sweep to victory. Dyna Ostrander was able to run into second place and qualify for the final for Victorian trainer Jenny Hunt. Both have drawn towards the outside next week but have plenty of class and will make their presence felt.

All eyes were on star South Australian chaser Aston Kane for trainer Ray Murray in the final heat to see if a South Aussie could make the final and he didn’t disappoint his local fans. He began brilliantly from the 5 box to gab the lead and from there was in no danger going on to record a solid 4 lengths win in a super 29.78 for the 515m journey. Ray’s son Troy grabbed the quinella when Lannister battled on nicely for second giving SA two representatives in the final. Impressive Victorian Dyna Villa couldn’t get into the race after a slow beginning and could only manage fourth place. Aston Kane will hope to repeat the feats of last years winner Ernie Bung Arrow who did it for SA in the Derby before going on and winning the Group 1 Adelaide Cup.

The $35,000 Group Three Final will be run next Thursday night 18th September. It will be race 8 on the program and is listed to jump at 9.11pm (SA time).
