2014 COFFEX COFFEE OAKS – BOX DRAW

Last night at Angle Park we saw four exciting heats of the Coffex Coffee Oaks where the first two placegetters from each heat qualified for next week’s Group 3 final. The local product was on show with three of the four heats taken out by SA Bred chasers and the locals training half of next week’s final field.

The fastest qualifier for the final was the Jeff Britton trained Victorian Oakvale Destiny who recovered from a slow beginning to record a blistering 29.63 for the 515m journey. She showed great race sense down the back straight to rail hard inside leader Spring Amanda before racing away for a 3½ length victory. Spring Amanda did a super job to hang on for second running a flying 29.85 herself. Both have drawn nicely in the final with Spring Amanda out of the red box and looking the likely leader and Oakvale Destiny drawn out of the four and has to be considered the testing material next week.

The first heat of the night was taken out by the Peter Hurley trained local Emerley Senorita at the luxurious odds of $25.00 who showed blistering speed from her wide box to cross her more fancied rivals before holding them at bay and recording a gutsy win. She rated a slick 29.85 for the 515m to just hold off red hot favourite Mepunga Hayley by a head with Frattini ¾ lengths away in third. The Jeff Britton trained Mepunga Hayley was still able to qualify for the final but was unlucky not to win after being chopped out on two occasions when attempting a run to the inside of Emerley Senorita.   The Group 1 winner will be very hard to beat in the final after drawing nicely in the 3 box with Emerley Senorita drawing the wrong side of the track for her out of the 2.

The second heat of the night was won in tradesman like style by Victorian Fratelli Fresh for trainer Dustin Drew who jumped to the front early and didn’t look like losing going on to record a handy 29.98 victory. She defeated Honky Tonk Doll by ¾ lengths who battled on nicely for second. In one of the more open heats, race favourites Oakvale Flyer and Lamia Bale couldn’t bridge the gap to the leaders after slow beginnings.

The final heat of the night was an all the win for South Aussie Footluce Diva for trainer Ken Trowbridge who flew the lids from box 7 to lead throughout in a sizzling 29.72 in winning by 3 lengths from Unix Bale for Steve Collins. Footluce Diva can be hit or miss at the start but last night she was on song and connections will be hoping box 5 is too her liking in next week’s final. Race favourites from across the border Eliza Blanche and Samus Allen both put up good performances however slow beginnings put pay to their chances of qualifying.

The $35,000 Group Three Final will be run next Thursday night 11th September. It will be race 8 on the program and is listed to jump at 9.11pm (SA time).

On course patrons last night also got a taste of things to come in the next few weeks with greyhounds trialling in preparation for next week’s Schweppes SA Derby and they couldn’t be anything but impressed with Hostile for trainer Darren Beasley. The Victorian has already trialed at Angle Park two weeks ago running a scintillating 29.60 however last night he went even quicker running a brilliant 4.48,16.88,29.51 for the 515m journey and now looks very hard to beat in the heats next week.

Anthony Bullock trialed handy Tasmanian Mason Pines last night however he looked to have some problems in the run only clocking 4.65,17.81,31.12 and subsequent to the trial he was found to be injured.
