Tamica Dunn Hoping To See The Best Of Aunty Meeka

The Group 3 Brian Johnstone series has rolled around for another year, with the three week series kicking off this Thursday night at Angle Park.

A lucrative series for eligible SA bred chasers, this year's Brian Johnstone will feature dogs and bitches that were born between July and December in 2022.

Four heats will be run Thursday, which will become two semi-finals next week, which of course leads into the $37,500 final in two weeks time.

Tamiica Dunn will have the one representative in the heats with the talented Aunty Meeka stepping out in the third heat.

So far in her career, Aunty Meeka (Fernando Bale x Irapsag Miss) has shown good ability, but has often found some poor luck in her races which has come from slow beginnings. She has shown a lot of natural strength in her races and been able to win 2 of her 12 starts to date. Dunn says we haven’t seen the best of her yet and that she has always had good ability.

“We are yet to see the best of Aunty Meeka. She broke in very well at Richmond in NSW. She is a bit of a quirky dog and is only just starting to figure things out. Her maiden win was impressive and she has shown that she can jump quickly at times, we just want to build up her confidence and consistency.” said Dunn

“As she’s not yet two years old, we think that once she puts it all together she will be a very competitive city class bitch.”

Aunty Meeka has had two starts back from a short one month spell, which Dunn felt she needed. Her last two starts have seen her run a strong third, before enduring a luckless run last week when running fifth.

“The month off was just to give her a little spell, she had been in work for some time and was showing signs of needing a little break. Her two runs back have been full of merit from unsuitable boxes.” said Dunn

“Her first run back from a spell she was probably a little underdone going in the race but still produced a personal best time. Her second run back she was unlucky and found trouble multiple times in the race, I think we can put a line through that run! And she will be better for it.”

The box draw has been much kinder for the black bitch on Thursday, coming up with a much more suitable box three, which Dunn is very pleased with, although she concedes that it is a tough heat, with the likes of Scary Eyes, Mallee Beauty and Josie Dakota engaged.

“An improved box draw will assist this week. She is in good condition and with an ounce of luck she should be competitive in a very difficult heat.” said Dunn

“If she is able to replicate her early speed from her first race at Angle Park she could lead through the catching pen or be close to the front and who knows from there. She is getting stronger in her races over 530m and the best is yet to come for her.”

In what looks a strong series, the headline acts will include Apilla, Zinfandel Pardy, Dakota Rylen, Zinfandel Trace, He’s Magic and of course the pair of Scary Eyes and Mallee Beauty.

Racing is set to get underway at 6:37pm on Thursday.
